Q: When drinking through the lid that has the plunger, does the plunger get in the way of your nose?

No because when fully pressed down the plunger is flush with the lid. My one criticism is that the plunger doesn't reach all the way to the bottom of the cup so some coffee is wasted or you end up drinking some grounds.

Q: Are you able to buy a spare seal for the press, mine has a slight tear in it and the ground coffee leaks into the coffe once pressed

Yes, both lids have a drinking hole and they also have a flip over lid for when you're using it in the car and it is in the cup holder I hope this helps!

Q: Has the design been changed recently to deal with the problems wirh the design?

As far as I know the design hasn't changed. The thread is still of poor quality and it doesn't seal properly, so when you start drinking it goes down your shirt/ blouse. I've gone for another make of travel press now. Don't trust the Bodum one
