The Gary Paulsen Collection (Boxed Set): Dancing Carl; Dogsong; Hatchet; Woodsong Review: Whether you’re a student or an old person (I’m 70), Gary Paulson is fantastic. - A must have set for my own enjoyment and as a school teacher. Paulson writes with understanding of the characters background and emotions. Keeps you on the edge of your seat! The books are sturdy and well made. Review: Great for fathers and sons - We read through the collection together, my 9 year old and I. Gary Paulsen has a lovely, occasionally expressionistic style (Dancing Carl was a little hard for my son to understand) but the rest are instant winners. We first encountered Paulsen through Hatchet, which is quite a tale of a young teen's survival in the wilderness after a plane crash. In some ways, Dogsong leads the way to the winner of the bunch for us, Woodsong. Dogsong was a little bit confusing for my son, as part of it is set in Dreams, but the premise of survival in the Arctic and the evolution of Russel within his world, his dogs, leads to a greater understanding of Woodsong. Woodsong is an autobiographical reflection on living in the harsh winter woods, culminating in the Iditarod. Paulsen's observations are humbling, terrifying, sometimes hallucinatory, and occasionally heartbreaking. But never dull. Great books to read together.

Good read for my kid
My kid hates to read. Its torture to him. But he read the first book at his school and wanted to keep reading them. The price was good.

Great for adventurous boys.
I read these when I was in grade 7. I bought them for my 10 year old, who reads at a grade 10 level. It is hard to find literature(fiction) that is both age appropriate and level appropriate for him. He loves these books. Christmas morning he finished the first half of The Hatchet. He finished the book that evening. He has already read it again! I think it is his favorite of the three.

Four Stars
Nice set for a reasonable price, but I'm not a huge fan of the cover art work

A gift for my 12 grandson! His idea!
My grandson has read one in this series & loved enough to ask me to read it. This was huge for him, books that is. A real turn the page, no screen. So I bought the series & know we will enjoy the memories of sharing thoughts.

4th grader enjoying them
My daughter loves these books. Shes in 4th grade reading them. She was introduced to this author by her school. I would look up the content before buying. It has a few older themed some might be ready for. My daughter is very mature and we talk a out everything. So open communication is key.
