Invaluable, Comprehensive Guide for Marketing Your Business
The 2019 Marketing Book by Jason McDonald is an invaluable resource for new startup businesses as well as currently established small businesses. Whether you are a current small business marketer / owner or new to the field, Jason helps you create a marketing plan that measures and gains results. I really like how he uses a “Think / Do / Measure” approach throughout the book. He explains each process / concept and then proceeds to help you through the steps to complete, all while also explaining the importance of measuring results. ALL VERY important to streamlining your efforts and knowing what is or isn’t working. This ensures you are continually improving as a marketer and selling more products or services in a practical, efficient manner. Jason does an excellent job explaining each of the steps in the process to successful marketing without dumbing it down, using big words that are hard to understand, or giving you watered down content. I have read many of Jason’s other books and thought they were excellent but I felt The Marketing Book was a step above all his other books. Very thoroughly written in a practical yet interesting and informative format. Very easy to understand and gives you the confidence that you can go to your computer and complete each of the concepts in a step by step manner while understanding why you are doing what you are doing. Essentially, The Marketing Book is a practical and comprehensive marketing guide to marketing, building your brand, and selling more products or services in an efficient manner – ALL very important to success as a marketer and your business’ bottom line. As a higher-level Marketer, I feel this is a great reference tool and a way to assess to be sure I am doing everything I should to succeed and improve company sales.

You had me at TWAGGLE
*purchased* I enjoyed reading through this book. It was very easy to read and comprehend. I found myself high lighting and feeling inspired. Many times I caught myselt saying, yeah, that makes sense or ahhhh that’s brilliant. This book was informative and written in a way that novice could understand. So if you are a small business owner, or on your way to becoming one, this is a great book. It didn’t talk over my head and come across as intimidating like some other books have. This book broke down terms like Business Value Proposition, Unique Selling Proposition, and customer segments. For those that have been entrepreneurs for a long time, it may be difficult to describe these things and why its important to know what they are and how to use/create them. This book explains the whats, why’s and hows in layman's terms and in a non judgemental nor threatening way. I felt inspired, knowledgeable and hopeful. With all that said – does it work? I can’t tell you that… yet. I am going through the book again, taking more notes and applying everything to my proposed small business. I am very excited. The book may not work for everyone. I think the challenge is actually to apply what has been suggested. So, will it work? I am sure that doing something will be better than nothing and as a new small business owner, I have hope that if I put in the work that has been suggested, I will certainly have more success than not having read this book. I like the way it's written. Make sense? Good luck!

Think and Do, Do and Rethink
This is a great book that gets you DOING. The pace starts slow but soon builds to a run. The beginning chapters are very simplistic and I was worried at first that this might be too much of a beginner book, but I was wrong. I used to do marketing for 11 years for a real estate company so I had a bit of background when starting this book. Now I do marketing for a completely different, and much more challenging, industry. This book challenged the assumptions I’ve been making in our marketing strategy, while backing up some suggestions I’ve been making to my boss, who is also my husband, so double win there: wife always right, even at work! Not only does McDonald provide clear information, explanations and actionable “to-dos,” he also includes clickable links that direct readers to articles, customizable, marketing templates, and even books by other authors to reinforce and expand on specific ideas. This is a book that actually delivers on its introductory promise of not only providing information on marketing theory, but helping readers put that theory into practice. You aren’t guessing how to use the strategies here, like you sometimes do with other marketing-type theory books. McDonald guides you in what to DO and then how to tweak it once you do, or like he says, “twaggle:” learn, do, measure, revise, redo. This would best assist and encourage small marketing team members or individual entrepreneurs who wear the marketing hat, along with many others!

Wonderful information in an easy to understand format - keep this book handy!
Use your ‘twaggle’ to create, promote, evaluate, and further your brand and you will succeed. But, this isn’t something that done once – it’s a continuous process. This book was great in that it takes all the aspects of branding and marketing for small businesses and puts them together in one place and then actually tell you how to use them and explains why. As a small business owner myself, I know I will keep this book in my pocket as a go to resource for many months and years to come. It is filled with the keys to success (explained so that they can be put into practice) – define your product, build your brand, content creation, promotion of your brand and channels to do this, and constantly question and evaluate to tweak your processes. Stagnation is not conducive to success. The author also does a great job of using real world examples like Ford and Apple to further define and explain the concepts he presents – all so you the business owner and reader has a firm grasp on what he is trying to convey. Continuous thinking is the key to all of the content in this book, in my opinion, and the author explains how constantly evaluating will create new paths for you to explore in promoting your brand. Written in a straight-forward, easy to read manner, this book is what I’ve been looking for to take my business to the next level – thank you!

the only marketing book i need
I just finished google’s free intro to marketing course and wanted to learn more about marketing and marketing online in particular. I think The Marketing Book is the only book I’ll need. The book covers everything from making an elevator speech to creating a marketing plan for your business. There are a lot of free supplements available from the author’s website that really helped me consolidate my ideas and understanding of the ideas in the book. Extensive explanations of resources fill each chapter, and I can use them for free to help me with my own business. There are real world examples from successful companies, and concepts are fleshed out using a humorous business based on cats as well. The author has also created his own terminology outside of the standard marketing lexicon. His idea of “twaggle” reminds me of the film crouching tiger hidden dragon where they say a good leader must be “firm yet supple.” Basically you need to do and think and think and do, something of a zen approach to solving problems about marketing. Perhaps gumption might also be a good synonym. The book is organized into chapters, each with a clear topic. Keywords are highlighted and there is always a summary at the end allowing you to zero in on the topics most interesting to you. There is also a call to action, or a call to twaggle, at the end of each chapter that helps apply the lessons presented. All of this is presented without pedantry or pretense, you don’t need to be a PhD to help you help your own business. Sure, some of this information is available for free on the internet, but here it is all in one place and seems very up to date. Overall I found this book wonderfully illuminating and empowering with many great ways to improve my business.

5 star marketing guide for small business owners and entrepreneurs
One could teach a college or professional level marketing course using this book as the principal guidance. There’s no doubt in my mind that anyone looking for a practical marketing guide would do good to take a chance on James McDonald’s “The Marketing Book.” First, the book itself holds value simply due to the author. James McDonald knows his stuff, and has a wonderful way of teaching concept strategies using simple to follow methods and examples. Obviously, a book needs more than just a great author though, and “The Marketing Book” delivers in flying colors. As a solopreneuer and former online business consultant, I can personally say that this book contains valuable information above and beyond the typical marketing crash course guides found online. The subject matter covers everything from defining your product and customer to niche markets, BVP, brand, advertising and the customer journey. The book is broken into different sections each focusing on a major component of marketing and then organized into subcategories of concepts to familiarize yourself with and then act on. I personally love James’ encouragement throughout the book and enthusiasm when it comes to learning new marketing principles. I constantly felt as though the author was acting as my own personal consultant, urging me to ask myself if “interruption advertising,” for example, is a good choice for my business, and if so to act on it. I know that many marketing concepts like SEO, influencer marketing and brand image can be tough to grasp for alot of people (myself included at times). So, having great examples and other references (like Seth Godin’s Permission Marketing) sprinkled throughout the book made me feel that I always had more help in a specific subject if I needed it throughout the course of this book. The author consistently introduces a concept, explains its benefits, pitfalls and use cases, and then asks you to do a bit of homework regarding the subject. I love the action points in the book, as they truly help you engage in the marketing strategies outlined in the guide. At the end of the book, after having consumed a course worth of knowledge and skills, you even get access to the online “marketing plan worksheet” to take your skills further and help you with your business and marketing strategy. Overall I strongly feel that this book is worthy of a 5 star review and people should know abiut this book.
