Homeowners Association and You: The Ultimate Guide to Harmonious Community Living

You'd think we would get over our schoolyard politics as adults...
Unfortunately, many haven't, which is why the advice in this book is rather handy. The homeowners' association I am a part of is a fledgling community I have likened the the original 13 colonies. In spite of all the ankle biting and back-stabbing, our Constitution has held this country together for over 200 years, and it is our duty to the lives given in support of our democracy that we take every opportunity to pay homage. Assuring a safe and secure neighborhood for your family and neighbors is the least that we can do as citizens. This book suggests ways to pull neighbors together for a common cause and what each participant could do to improve the quality of a community. How Dr. Coleman reveals the nuances of homeowners' associations was an eye-opener for me. If you want to learn the basics and how to become a more astute member of a homeowners' association, this is a good start.

Good reference book
Thank you for the great information in this book. When I became the president of my association I was blind like many new presidents. This book opened my eyes.

Great Resource for HOA Members
I purchased this book after volunteering to become a member of the Landscape Committee of our HOA. The information is very helpful in coming to an understanding of our purpose and responsibilities as HOA members and participants.

HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION AND YOU
This book provided a lot of the basic information I needed. It has been really helpful. The only problem I had was when I looked in the index. For a specific word like "Annual Meeting" it referenced several pages that weren't really applicable. But, I would recommend this book to anyone new to a HOA.

What drivel
You would think that a judge would have an understanding of the "profoundly undemocratic lifestyle many people in Homeowners Associations face today". (Quote, Edward Hannaman, NJ Dept Consumer Affairs and quoted by the AARP)He does not even mention that all HOA's govern with:A: A single party political system (More communist China than USA). Not a word about the necessity of opposition parties in a supposedly political system ( you vote right?).B: No free press...I mean c'mon! I will give you $100 for any community "newsletter" that has ever printed a single criticism of a sitting board! These "newsletters" are more strictly controlled than Pravda ever was and Judge Huss never even mentions this.C: No....and I can't believe he misses this...independent judiciary. A sitting California judge likened this to a "banana republic".D: No state oversight or enforcement mechanisms of existing laws...you must hire...what a coincidence....a lawyer at $300/hr minimum to protect your rights!E: And last but not least, a defect that James Madison (you remember him...the father of the Constitution?) said would warrant "the abrogation of the entire system"...no separation of powers scheme! An HOA board enjoys the Executive, Legislative AND police and Judicial powers, a absolute political no-no, but the author...well you get the point. It is truly frightening to read a work authored by a Judge that is so ignorant of the horror show that Homeowners Association represent to our hard earned right of living and being protected by a Constitutional democracy today. But perhaps he is not so ignorant. The Community Associations Institute, a lobbying group of lawyers and property managers have 57 chapters across the country that ensure that no laws are passed that provide oversight, constraints or enforcement of the laws that are designed to protect homeowners from HOA boards. What about the scores of homeowners who have lost their homes for less than $100 owed to their HOA; Or veterans for flying the American flag. But the author.....oh never mind. Don't waste your money on this drivel
