Q: How long is the threaded section?

the entire nipple is threaded and total length is 2 3/16" long

Q: Is this going to improve general water pressure to the raw water/livewell pump or its basically used for straining purposes?

It improves water when boat is in gear, moving forward. Otherwise without it, you have a negative pressure on the pump.

Q: what is the correct way to istall this for a livewell? grills facing forwards or backwards?

I installed mine forward so it self primes

Q: Is this designed to be used below water level

Yes. To be clear, it is not brass, as someone stated below. Brass fittings or valves will corrode and should not be used for marine purposes, especially below the waterline. This is bronze, and you should always use a bronze ball valve or seacock attached directly to this thru-hull. In the event your tubing ruptures you can shut the valve and stop the flow.
