More than an extra kick.
Something about this that packs a spicier and more complex taste than the normal Southern Comfort - and it's not just the extra heat from the higher alcohol content. In comparison to the regular So-Co it has a more tobacco brown tint to the colour and less red. The taste is more fiery and less of the medicinal, cough syrup of the regular, with extra cinnamon or other spices, but still beautifully smooth despite what you'd imagine from 50% by volume, even to the point a brave soul (or an idiot such as myself!) might actually neck a bit straight from the bottle. Whatever it is, I definitely think it's head and shoulders above the 35% and has become my favourite bottle. In comparison to the 40% Black: no contest, wipes the floor clean of that muck. Sorry, but the Southern Comfort Black somehow managed to lack the spice and depth of the 100% proof, retain the cough syrup of the regular 35% yet not be as easy on the palette - sweetened drain cleaner. Me, an alcoholic? Not yet sir! But I could be working on it...

Lovely taste and stronger. If only all Southern Comfort was made this way. Is it worth the doubling of the price? I dont think so. It was however a present and I loved it. I may buy again for an occasion.

Not the American black, but better than UK 35%
I think the title says it all... If you like that UK 35%ABV version then you should try this, it's like that but stepped up a gear. If your looking for the American black 50, I'm sorry this isn't even close. Don't waste your time and money. TL:DR Better than the standard UK offering, not a patch on the 50% yank juice

the yanks call it 100% but they work different to us its brewed to 100 degrees so it actually only 50 percent in GB but by God its nice !
