Kratos' First Adventure in the God of War Chronological Story
God of War: Ascension was the sixth game released in the franchise (not including mobile/browser games), but as a prequel is actually the first of Kratos' stories after becoming a servant of the God of War Ares. With five previous games, the gameplay in Ascension is polished and fantastic. Fans of any of the Greek era games will know exactly what to expect with simple combat foundation of light and heavy attacks that build into more complex combo building options as they are unlocked and weapons leveled up. It can be a little jarring to go from Ascension and Chains of Olympus (on PlayStation Portable or on PS3 in the Origins Collection) to the original game from PS2 (or on the PS3 Saga Collection), due to the gameplay going from the peak of its polished development back to the original game that started the franchise, but if you're a fan of older games and have no problem adjusting to older combat and gameplay elements, I highly recommend a chronological playthrough of the Greek Saga entries, starting here. In this story, Kratos is imprisoned by the Furies for betraying his oath to serve Ares, but breaks free of his prison and sets out on a quest to confront the Oracle of Delphi to find a way to escape the Furies once and for all. The set pieces are fantastic, though some of the later stages do start to feel a little long in the tooth. Trimming down a few of the stages by about 1/3 probably would have worked better for me, but overall you know what to expect going into a God of War game... or if you don't, well, this is a good start to a brutal, and brute-headed, path of carnage.
