Be Advised - then Buy!
These are the unedited Hal Roach shorts from a time when humor was different from today. Racial stereotypes abound, and attitudes towards parenting might shock you. Even the syndicated reruns I watched in the '70s were censored. These are not. But you probably already know that, and just want to reconnect with a part of your childhood. This is a great collection at an amazing price, but it's not complete. It begins with the first talkies (there were a hundred silents before) and goes right through the main sequence up to the end of the Hal Roach period. You get Farina, Chubby, Stymie, Alfalfa, and Spanky from the beginning. You get Porky, Buckwheat, Darla, Shirley, and all the rest. But, you do not get Froggy, Janet, nor Micky Gubitosi (young Bobby Blake.) They all started in the later MGM era that isn't included in this collection. It's 80 shorts on 4 discs that play for hours on end. I only take away a star because it is billed as "the complete collection" which it is not. Bottom line, it's the best deal available for a property who's clock is ticking. These will likely fade into obscurity as sensibilities change
