It's a USB splitter and it works.
It's a USB-A splitter. It worked fine otherwise I'd have returned it. If you're looking at these, you probably need one. My needs didn't require any kind of speed or anything so I can't comment on if these slow down USB transfer speeds or not.

Works for charging multiple devices
I bought a pair of LED lights that charge using USB cables. I keep them out in the garage where USB ports are at a premium, and I wanted to be able to charge both lights from a single port. This was the cheapest, easiest solution. If you buy this to charge 2 devices in parallel, keep in mind that you'll be at the mercy of how much current your USB port can put out. You won't magically double the current output, so devices in parallel will charge slower. I haven't tried using this for data so no idea if it will work for that or not. You're on your own there. However, if you need to charge 2 devices at once, this will get the job done for minimal cost.

Works well for running USB Ceiling fans.
I'm totally blind. I got this to be able to run two ceiling fans off of one USB port. Note! If you do this for any device, you need to make sure your USB brick can handle the load. In my case, I ahve a few USB ceiling fans in one room. The USB brick only had so many ports. In this case, the USB brick is 20W at 5V but only had 2 ports. I have at least 3 fans I wanted to run off of this brick. So I got this to see if it would do the job and it does. I was running two fans and they did OK. So I plugged in one of these splitter and then plugged two fans into it and had the 3rd one on the 2nd port of hte Brick. The 3 fans ran at full speed. When I tried plugging in a 2nd splitter on the 2nd port of the brck and then had 2 fans plugged into that! I noticed that all the fans slowed down some being they got louder and that happens when they run at a lower speed. Whenever I would unplug one of the fans didn't matter what splitter I unplugged the fan from! The remaining 3 would speed back up and become quieter. So that told me the splitter was OK; Just that the brick couldn't really take the load with 4 fans running, but did great with 3 USB ceiling fans running. The 2nd splitter I will keep being I plan on getting some more of the USB ceiling fans and have another USB brick for that project. So for how I'm using this splitter it is working as it should. Each USB fan pulls 1A at 5V. So with 3 fans running on the brick it is pulling 3A for a total of 15W give or take a little. That is for only USB ports on the brick. So make sure you brick can handle the load and I would say don't overload the splitter. No idea what each leg of the splitter is rated at. 1A at 5V looks to be OK for a total of 2A or 10W.

Why did it quit working
Purchased in July, didn't get an opportunity to use it until August. It worked for a little while and then it inexplicably stopped functioning.

purchased to power 2 sets of USB speakers, worked perfectly with no issues

Both ports are not compatible with USB data. I received one port only for power and another port for both power and data, which I already had.
