Huel Hot and Savory is an interesting take on meal replacement.
So far I have only tried the Indian curry, but I went in with really low expectations. Huel's Hot and Savory line gets terrible reviews! To put this into perspective, I am a quite confident home cook, if I do say so myself. I needed Huel because there are days where I am off to a quick start doing many different things. I don't have the time sometimes to make a whole lunch or prepare it the day before. I feel like many people find themselves in this situation, where they either miss breakfast, lunch, or even both. On those days, as of recent, I have been happy to just mix some Huel with water, pop it in old Chef Mike for two-and-a-half minutes and then boom, it's a nutritionally complete meal. It is worth noting that I would say to think of Huel Hot and Savory (at least the Indian Curry) as a savory oatmeal. It is made with a lot of quinoa and rice bits. So when you get the idea in mind about what the consistency is going to be like, the flavor is very tasty. While I am mentioning the flavor, the Spicy Indian Curry is heavily spiced and almost like an Indian chili in a way, it is not to be confused with the flavor or Tikka Masala or Butter Chicken though, it is far from that. It has a very mild tongue burn, but I was happy to see little red chili bits in the Huel. I have seen other reviewers mention a high sodium content, overall I don't find it to be overbearing at all or too salty on flavor. As for sodium content besides flavor, as this is a full meal replacement, it is good to have this salt. For my diet, I find it to be a proper amount of salt considering I only eat this stuff when I was too busy to make lunch or breakfast. In moments like this, I wouldn't have had any salt this whole time yet drank a lot of water, so the salt actually comes in to replenish otherwise low levels of sodium. So the bottom line: Huel is good if you would like a meal replacement that isn't a shake. It comes in a variety of flavors that which I am going to try. It is worth noting that buying directly from Huel, you can buy more bags and save money. The high price point on Amazon is a bit misleading but it is okay if you're like me and you would have rather tried it first. The Spicy Indian Curry was great, I would get it again if it wasn't sold out currently on Huel's official website. Here's to hoping that Huel keeps on refining their recipes and making the food taste better. The spicy Indian Curry is great but with just a little more work, I'm sure it could appeal to the masses.

Tastes Like Waters Down Cardboard
This is the second Huel flavor I have tried, the first one was Thai Green Chili which I quite enjoyed even though it has shown as the worst flavor for a lot of consumers (add a squeeze of lime and some cilantro and it is excellent!) I chose the Mac n Cheese flavor because in most product reviews, it places as the #1 flavor. I was excited to try it and share it with my vegan niece. That first bite was super disappointing, though. I ate a few more bites to see if it got better, but I couldn't finish it. The flavor was weak and it tastes wooden, somehow. I tasted none of the sweetness from the tomatoes that I saw in reviews. The only thing I liked was that there was a crunch from what might have been friend onions in the macaroni. I thought it might just be a personal thing, so I told my niece I would give it to her and/or her boyfriend, if they liked it. She had liked the Thai Green Chili flavor, so she wanted to try this one. She took a bite, made a face and said "No". I asked if she had any other opinions and she said "Just no", still making a face over the aftertaste. Can't return it, but I will not buy this flavor, again. Just hope I can find someone who likes it, so I can give it away. Oh and this is the second bag I have ordered that didn't come with the scoop. Even though they showed a picture of the scoop with the product. Not sure what's going on there.

Use your judgment
I'm a full-time Registered Nurse always on the go. I've never been consistent with meal prepping, so my lunch during the week consists of the closest fast food restaurant. After seeing the ads for Huel and reading all the reviews, I figured I'd buy a bag on Amazon to try for myself before committing to their prescription. I was sold on the ingredients and the fact that it's vegan friendly, since I have a sensitive stomach. Upon opening the Mexican Chili bag, the first two things I noticed were the nice aromas of the seasonings, and the lack of a scooper. Other reviewers have also expressed the lack of a scooper, so I used a 1/3 cup from home and a thermos. I turned the bag upside-down and shook vigorously to make sure the ingredients were well spread, as other reviewers have voiced inconsistencies with seasonings vs. the veggies/rice. I've only used very hot to boiling water to let it sit for 5-10 minutes, and I tend to eyeball the amount rather than measure. From both batches I've made, the sauce has the consistency of refried beans. The flavor is edible, and I do get a pleasant little kick from the seasoning (I have a week tongue when it comes to spicy food). It's got a little crunchiness to it, probably remedied with more water or letting it sit longer. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase and I ended up going on the Huel site to create a subscription. They're sending a free a t-shirt, warming container, and scooper with my purchase. One thing I've noticed in the reviews they don't mention is that they offer discounts for medical professionals and veterans.

Perfect clean nutritious meal
I love Huel and this is my go-to from what they offer. I was looking for some good, clean nutrition that wouldn't break the bank or taste like garbage and this fit the bill. The very first time I made it, I did pause for a moment because it doesn't look super appetizing, but the taste is really, really good. This is my daily lunch and since I've incorporated it into my daily meals, I've become a healthy weight. It's only 400 calories which is good for a meal that actually fills you up. Can't recommend it enough. A couple things I saw in others' reviews that stood out to me that I wanted to comment on: --It says it comes with a scoop. When you buy it from Huel directly, your first order comes with 2 scoops. From Amazon, it seems to be hit or miss whether they're included. The packaging description seems to be straight from the Huel site which would explain why some folks don't have the scoop (amazon has to remember to include it; it's not inside the bag). The scoop is critical though if you're going to dole this out in the correct portion. (You can get replacement scoops from Huel directly for 50 cents. I don't see the actual Huel scoop alone sold on Amazon.) --some folks commented on it being watery. I don't get that at all and it makes me wonder if not everyone is following the directions. It thickens over time. You put in 2 scoops of Huel. Add boiling water to the line. Screw the lid on the hot pot, and walk away for 5 minutes, at least. Then you unscrew the lid and mix it up. The longer it sits, the thicker it gets (like oatmeal). So if you think it's watery...give it a bit more time to cook itself. I usually leave it for about 7 minutes then mix it up. By the time I sit down to eat it, it's usually been around 10 minutes and it's perfect (in my opinion). The coconut curry flavor is also gluten-free for folks like me who need that. So for me, this is a must. I start my day with the Huel daily greens (not a meal replacement; I have overnight oats for breakfast) and usually eat the hot Huel for lunch. Great flavor. Quick. Easy. And while it seems expensive at first glance, it shakes out to about $5 a meal which is very reasonable. Highly recommended.

Flavor is decent, but didn't come with a scoop
Seems like a silly thing to worry about, however their directions are ONLY in these apparently super secret scoop sizes. I don't know why they'd tell you how many ounces of water but not give you any idea how big the scoop size is in case they forget to include it like with mine, or if you lose yours. Flavor isn't amazingly great but it works for a quick lunch if you add a few spices of choice. Maybe it would taste better if I were using the correct ratio per this coveted proprietary scoop size. Sorry for being overdramatic, but I ordered two of these to try and neither came with the scoop as promised. Wouldn't be an issue if they added the size in ounces somewhere near the directions. Just a weird barrier to entry for new customers based on a simple mistake the manufacturing process is bound to make from time to time.

Sigh. It’s bad in all the ways I hoped it would be good.
Before I get started, I just want to say I’m not someone who only writes bad reviews. If you check out my profile, you should see a pretty good mix of different star reviews. That said…. I have been getting bombarded with Huel advertising for the past six months. My wife and I have two kids under the age of three and don’t have as much time for cooking as we used to. So I figured I would take the leap and give it a chance since it seemed like a high protein, low effort meal… perfect for stressed out vegetarian parents. Taste: Bad. So bad. :( Read some of the other reviews. It’s bland. The consistency of textures isn’t quite right. Somehow too soft and too hard at the same time. It’s possible I cooked it wrong but the cooking instructions are akin to making Mac and cheese. Body feeling: About five hours after eating this for the first time, I got a pretty bad stomachache. Sorry if this is TMI, but I was incredibly gassy for the rest of the day while it’s possible that that came from something else, most of what I had eaten that day are things that I eat regularly. when my stomach started to hurt, I asked myself what did I eat? This doesn’t feel right. Price: it’s hard to say if this is overpriced or not. This is a weird market so it’s probably priced as it should but now that I’ve tried it, it feels extremely overpriced. I suppose something is worth what people are willing to pay for it and I paid this so that’s probably on me. Return policy: I actually bought two bags of these and had planned to return one of them since I had such a bad reaction to it, but when I clicked on the return button, it said “there is no return policy.” Which is the exception and not the rule with Amazon these days. 😏 Sigh… my plan is to try to give this away for free on Buy nothing. Team H: If someone from the company is reading this, I really wanted to like your product! It seemed like a really great solution to a problem I had as a father of two kids with limited time. I feel like the idea is five stars, but for me, the execution just isn’t there. It’s possible I would’ve liked some of the other recipes more? But I had such a bad experience with one with this one that I probably won’t try the second ($40) bag. To anyone else reading this, I’d log this product in the “too good to true” bucket. I don’t know how else to say it, but I’m really surprised that someone tasted this and went to market with it. It probably needed 2 to 3 more iterations.

Pretty Bland. Don't follow the instructions.
I originally got the starter pack of the Huel website, so I got the scoops and the cup with a lid, the shakes and cup for those, so I'm able to follow the directions on the bag to make these meals. I've tried most of them now, and the thing I have learned is to completely ignore the instructions. If you follow the instructions, the pasta will be crunchy and completely uncooked. How I do it is to put the scoops of meal in a microwave safe bowl. I then add boiling water. I add much more than they suggest, I don't even measure it, I just pour in the water, mix until the sauce thickens, pour in more. It took me a few times of trial and error to get the right amount, and I was always adding too little water. So it needs a lot more than they say. I'd make it very soupy. I would then cover the bowl with a plate and pop it in the microwave for 2 minutes. I then let it sit for another 2 minutes before mixing it up and eating it. The pasta is still very chewy, but it is at least not crunchy. Also, for the Mac & Cheese I add some garlic powder, onion powder, and Italian seasoning, so it at least has SOME flavor. Because otherwise it has almost no taste. It certainly does not taste like cheese. I probably won't get this one again. But the Mushroom pasta and the Cajun pasta is good, the Tomato & Herb is good. I am honestly not sure this is worth it, however. At 14 scoops that is 7 meals a pack, and at $45 that's about $6.40 per meal. You could get almost 2 frozen dinners from Walmart for that cost, and they are less of a hassle to cook. None of them taste good enough to be worth the extra cost, and none of them are any easier to cook than a frozen dinner.

Complete easy full nutrition
I began using the standard vanilla (non-gluten free) version of Huel on 08.20.2018. I just this morning opened my 2nd two bag purchase (I have paid for them all, no freebies.). I am whole heartedly endorsing this product. Is it perfect, no. But the world of powdered meals/supplements never is. What this product is, for my money, is damn near perfect/ideal. The vanilla flavor is enough to taste it but not overpowering. The base sweetness is the same, sufficient but not too much. It takes additions well to make the flavors more varied and enjoyable. It is tasty with just water and nothing else. All that being said, its a powdered drink and yes it can be "gritty, thick, pasty" if you don't add sufficient water to thin it down. I have found it acceptable in a pinch just mixed in the supplied shaker, but I primarily have prepared shakes with my recently "unmothballed" Nutra-Bullet power mixer. The results are infinitely better out of some sort of blender. It reduces the much complained about gritty texture straight out of the shaker by unscientifically maybe 70%, we will just go with A LOT. Its quite smooth and milkshake like in consistency when blended with 18 oz of water and some ice cubes. Huel is quite filling and satisfying for a good period of time for me after drinking. I always gave up on the soy or whey based protein drinks because they always left me "craving" something more. Being just protein my body got no carbs or fats cravings satisfaction. I really like and believe the balanced nutrition that comes from the Huel mix keeps my body fed and satiated longer. I likely have a slower metabolism than some, that being said a 500-550 cal serving of Huel will keep me full for up to 4 hours if I am not overly active (office style desk job most days) less obviously if exercise or activity is increased. I have been using Huel at least two times a day with a traditional dinner or at times three times a day as the only nutrition source. Either way I have felt fully fed throughout the day. Huel has also jumpstarted something I have been desiring to try but been hesitant to do. Vegetarianism. At least part time... Huel makes it easy to eat Vegetarian/Vegan. No fuss no muss. I have added a Green superfood powder additive to each meal as well. I have lost weight on Huel as well. In the 14 days so far I have lost 7 pounds. I have been averaging 1800-2000 calories a day and have not felt deprived in anyway. I would recommend Huel to those on the fence about it. Understand that its a risk, you may not like the taste at all. You may not be able to get past the texture no matter how you prepare it, etc. Its not cheap per say as a whole, and if you hate it, it is $70 down the drain. So its a gamble i suppose. But with some creativity on additives and preparation, I think most people will enjoy it and get a lot of good out of using it. Good luck!
