I love the Lakota and was led to Joseph Marshall by a wonderful chain of events. I have travelled to South Dakota and been to Rosebud, so this collection of stories have enormous meaning for me. The stories within the book are based on the oral tradition that the Lakota used to offer wisdom and guidance to their tribal people through the ages. The stories are interspersed with modern day tales written in a wonderfully sensitive manner. If you are fascinated by the Native American Culture especially the Lakota, I highly recommend this lovely book. I will be dipping into it over and over again to receive wise counsel when I am looking for the answers to life's challenges. Many thanks Joseph for this wonderful book. The Native American original people have been treated disrespectfully for generations but they remain a noble and indomitable spiritual people who have so much to teach the rest of the world. I enjoyed the stories with their messages - Good book. I enjoyed the stories with their messages, and I enjoy learning about Native American culture and lifestyle. Not for that, I can't remember what they call it - thunder dance or thunder, something, when, whoever he was wanted the wolf dog for a ritual in which he was going to boil him alive... I think that was the only bit I didn't like. So glad the young woman didn't give the dog to him.

A privilege to own this book
This book was published in 2001, which makes it 22 years old today. I feel it's a privilege to own it, as it's so full of information and in great condition. The philosophy and creative fiction stories are absolutely wonderful!

You should buy this book.
Lovely book. Well written and very thoughtful. I was quite sad when I reached the end, the author made for an entertaining and wise companion.

I really enjoyed reading this book
I really enjoyed reading this book. Lovely stories. I am not a fan of self help type books generally but this one is different because I do like traditional stories and each chapter of this book contains a full length traditional story which the author uses to illustrate the chapter headings e.g Honour , Courage , friendship he then links it to a life event of his own. The paper quality is disappointing as it is definitely the sort of book I would like to keep and the pages are very thin so it would probably not stand up to being re read often .

The Lakota Way
The Lakota Indian people are part of the Sioux Nation, this book is a great wealth of knowledge. The American Indians had the perfect society, a utopian one we might aspire to. The women ran the groups and there was no crime. Their lifestyle is something Western society would envy today, a place where there were no prisons, no taxes, resources were managed and not abused or squandered, reverence to the planet and the resources, children could be safe, the community worked together and cared for those who needed help. This book shows numerous examples of these things we would love to achieve but were part of everyday life for the American Indian. Not only were these people living in a simple but advanced society, they even invented social media - smoke signals. Study these great people, you will enrich your life and start to redefine your own for the better.

This book is a joy to read and a gem
This book is a joy to read and a gem: full of great life principles. Such a great read, it's a book that you want to keep forever. The writer is so fluid and makes this book one of the most enjoyable reads ever, for me.

... the whites systematically destroyed tribes who had such a beautiful way of living
How could the whites systematically destroyed tribes who had such a beautiful way of living, self helping and working in one with nature. A wonderful concise book telling the basics of Sioux culture. I just wish they did not fight each other as tribes slaughtering one another to keep up warrior status is such a waste. There was more than enough to go around. But when the common enemy the whites came then it was only a matter of time before ethnic cleansing triumphed.

Hervorragend!

As I read the book, I walked in the stories - albeit in my mind's eye. And I felt the weather, sat in the homes, and I cried with persons I met. TU Joseph M. Marshall III - I enjoyed the read and learned a lot - and you filled in a few blank spots of history of the plains.
