Works great
I've had the Lanskey sharpening kit for over 30 years. I added this coarse stone to more quickly grind the proper angle on a Knife I've never sharpened with the Lanskey before. It cut the angle in record time. I've done 2 kithchen knives so far and it has worked great.

Great for creating a new bevel
This stone is extra coarse and quickly provides a new bevel to restore a damaged or extremely dull knife edge. Having this as an option speeds up the sharpening process imensely. Just a few passes across the edge sets an even bevel to begin the process of getting a sharp blade. Subsequent grits go much faster for a productive sharpening process.

Quality
Good for establishing the angle you want on a blade. Will put a shaving edge on a blade without scratching it, if you use the follow up finer stones. Kind of slow, so I only use it for show blades.

My most used sharpener brand
I have a three hone kit I have used for years. They are still holding up well. Now I am just getting the different grit hones that did not come in the kit to fill the voids.

Very coarse!
I don't currently have any knives that need this stone, but I'm sure that when I do need to use it, it will make the first part of the grind so much easier than just using the coarse stone.

The one I needed
About a month ago, I bought the Lansky Standard sharpening system, as I wanted to try it out without spending too much. I was able to sharpen some knives somewhat, but wasn't completely happy. My knives are neglected, as I haven't been very good at sharpening them, and that's frustrating. So I thought maybe I needed the extra coarse stone to really reset the edges. Bingo. I sharpened a very dull Messermeister french knife this morning, which has been abused. The tip is broken off, and it has a couple of notches in the edge. Well, the notches are still there, of course, but as soon as I did 30 strokes on each side with the extra-coarse stone, it was sharp enough to be useful. Surprisingly sharp, in fact. So I followed up with the coarse, medium, and fine, and it's almost shaving sharp. With a little more attention, I think I could shave with it, but it's certainly satisfactory now. This extra-coarse stone made the difference.
