Nice style, but bad finish job.

It's been many years since I smoked a pipe. With that said, I have to give this pipe only 3 stars because of the finish. I still have my old pipes (good pipes), but I liked the looks of this one. Back in my day, a good pipe did NOT have a lacquer or varnish finish. It was just good briar wood sanded smooth. Part of the joy of smoking a pipe was to see the wood take on a warm glow from ther olis in your skin. Maybe this is progress,i.e. having a varnish like finish on pipes. I can live with that if it is done well. This one was not. There are two large runs in the finish where too much was applied. Looks awful. I'll keep the pipe. For my use it won't matter except that I know somebody did a crap job on the finish.
