How strong is the mesh with kitty claws?

How strong? Well, it's a plastic coated mesh on the front panel, and my Bengal can't get through it, so far.  The mesh is uncoated on the expandable part. Be sure to secure the zippers, otherwise kitty can work open the spot where the dual zippers meet, front and rear. The see-through plastic seems pretty resistant to scuffing and scratches. Overall, it's pretty sturdy and works well as a pet carrier.

How big of a water bottle can the water bottle holder carry? The original wide-mouth, 1L Nalgene bottle?

It fits a regular water bottle size maybe a little bit bigger. You won’t want to carry something that big in it though cause it can get side heavy with your pet. I took our cat in it for a hike and you have to balance the weight properly. When my cat moves it shifts the weight. Having the water bottle on one side and our lunch on the other was a good balance. 1L is pretty heavy.

Hello, this backpack is suitable for pets up to 18 lbs. But sometimes weight may be misleading to determine whether or not a pet would fit. It is best to measure your pet's height and length (and measure the space your pet takes up while laying down curled up) and compare those measurements with the dimensions of our backpack (17.3" H x 13.4" L x 10.6" W).

Can this be used in an airline? Isnit approved for airline use?

Used this on Allegiant Airlines recently.  My first adventure with my pup on an airline.  It is larger than the published specs of the airline, but it is squishy.  To fit best and mostly under the seat, it would have to be laid on its back, top slid in first.  However, due to the design of the Allegiant seats and leg space on the A320, there really isn't much "under the seat" space.  It's very open with the angle of the seat (legroom+ seat which gave us about 4" of additional leg space.).  This allowed me to open the expansion compartment under the seat and have the main part of the backpack carrier sit upright and flush to the back of the seat.  A bit cramped for my legs, but wasn't an issue for me or the flight attendants.  Your experience may depend on the attendants.

My pup = 14 lb mix and stands about 13" at shoulder.  I was able to easily open the expansion for him while waiting at the gate, so he could stretch out.  When the expansion space is closed, it is easy to carry the bag by the top handle, but I preferred using it as a backpack.  Waist and chest straps are nice additions.  I "trained" my pup getting in/out of the bag and riding in it in the car for 4 weeks prior to travel; our flights and training trips were <2hrs.  Very easy to take him out and put back in which is required for TSA security checks using either of the side openings and the included, interior pet collar/harness clip.

Note:  I used a different pet carrier by Paws&Pals on my outbound flight on the same airline, same row (7), and type of plane.  It's base is about 2" longer, and the carrier is about 5" shorter.  It is a shoulder bag.  I took it as I was concerned about the larger size of the Petcute bag.  The Petcute bag was folded and in my luggage.  The Paws&Pals carrier also didn't fit all the way under the seat.  So, on my return trip I tried and preferred the Petcute bag as it is much more sturdy and taller, could open the expansion area, and it's a backpack, so better all around for both pup and me.  The Airline staff had no issues with either bag.  In the future, I will only use this Petcute bag for our airline travels.
