This is the best lantern ever
This is the best lantern ever. I haven't tried any other lantern, but I don't need to. I still haven't changed the batteries on this and I've carried it around a lot. My toddler also loves to ruin my night vision with it in dimply lit rooms. He would agree that it doesn't get much better.

Lasts forever
I bought this in March 2015. It is now October 2020, and it's still going strong on the original batteries. We used it extensively when camping, but for the last three years I've been using it as a loft light (no electricity up there yet). A couple of months ago I did some work up there and accidentally left it turned on for about 48 hours, but it's still showing no signs of needing new batteries. UPDATE: 19th June 2021. Just replaced the batteries for the first time. They're not flat yet, but it's been a bit dim for a while. I might update this again in another six years...

Excellent
Pro's - Terrific lamp doing as advertised and exceeding expectations re sturdiness, light emittence on high, medium and cozy. Improvements -Batteries + lamp = bit heavy but really competition is worse if the lamp also needs a decent high setting -No torch function -No "find in the dark LED

Not as bright as expected
Going from strength of reviews I was expecting this to throw a lot more light than in does. It's about equivalent to perhaps a 40w bulb I would say, and replacing the batteries is pretty difficult.

It's a little early for a proper review but, thus far, I'm very impressed with this lantern. I have six long wintery nights using a mix of "high", "medium", and "low" settings....using the cheapest batteries I could find (RayOvac), and it shows now signs of dimming or stopping. While it doesn't light up my 20' yurt like Vegas, the "high" setting provides ample light for reading, if close, and the "low" setting is great for seeing just enough to move around. On "high", it provides enough light for general tasks when placed in the center of the yurt. It is simple and seems well built and designed. I especially like how it can be used as a light by removing the top and turning upside down. There's a recessed bar in the bottom which one can use to hang from. However, I drilled holes in the upper bunks in my yurt...just big enough for the lamp to fit in (~1.75") while upside down, allowing me to place the lantern where I please to read while sitting or laying in the bottom bunk. Some of the other reviewers mentioned that the bottom is difficult to get back on after replacing the batteries. There are bright red and clearly visible arrows on mine which, are there to make this easy. And it is easy....if those arrows are lined up. Not difficult lining them up either....though it would be in the dark with no other light source. I like this lantern enough that I will likely get another for the yurt. One would remain stationary in the kitchen area while the second would be for task lighting.... when not in the center for general lighting. UPDATE, Nov 10, 2015: It's been nearly a year since I wrote that review. I have six additional nights on this lantern most of which were run on the "high" setting only...a few nights when my 12 yr old stayed up late reading. I'm on the same cheap batteries as last year. Repeat: These are the only set of batteries I've used in this thing and it's still going strong! It's probably not as bright as it would be with new batteries....but it's still going which amazes me. My one and only complaint is that the bottom IS difficult to align properly and get back on when replacing batteries (I've been removing mine between yurt visits). With good eyes and plenty of light, it's no problem. Otherwise, it can be a little frustrating. Otherwise, I am as impressed with this lantern as anything I've been impressed with....and with each yurt visit, we talk about how nice it would be to have another, if not two more of these lanterns. UPDATE #2, June, 19, 2016 I have used this lantern another 15 nights, at least, since the last update...and the thing is still on the first and only set of cheap batteries! Unbelievable! It is obviously more dim now but still...if someone would have told me what I have/am writing here, I'd have a hard time believing it. I hung it up high and upside-down, with the top off, in the center of my yurt and it provides enough light for me for general tasks...even now that the batteries are losing juice. I take it down for reading. I'm now thinking a second one would be nice but really, I find no need. Amazing lantern!

Weather related power outages are a reality for many of us, and there are lots of solutions for "When the lights go out" Candles work, are relatively inexpensive, but if you have children or are tired they also present a danger. Coleman style gas or propane lanters are really useful, eliminate the flicker of candles, but you still have to be mindful of the danger of fire and their globes and tops can give one a nasty burn. Battery powered incandescent lights, and flashlights are useful, but most only run for at most an hour or two depending on the unit, and the freshness of the batteries of course. Fluorescent lanters are extremely useful, provide a steady stream of light and can be very compact as well. They tend to run for relatively long time periods on batteries, and are a good choice. But at our home, when the power goes off the first thing I reach for is one of my LED lantern style lights. There are some cheapie units that emit a bluish or reddish glow, this unit gives off crisp, clean, bright, white light. Battery life is awesome and if you fall asleep, well no harm done, just a little less battery life. Therefor if you have young ones, or cats or dogs this eliminates any worry of fires. Additionally they come on with the light at full intensity and do not require any warm up whatsoever, unlike fluorescents. I bought this unit as an addition to the RayoVac Sportsman model that also requires three D sized cells. The UST lantern is well made and feels pretty darn solid with good quality plastics and fit well and render the lantern weather resistant- but it is not designed to "Throw into the pool." The globe can be removed leaving you with an illumination beacon similar to a bare light bulb and this is wonderfully useful for a room light, as there is a nook on the base allowing you to hang it up. Bright illuminates my 12 by 25 family room fairly well, and my 52 year old eyes can read on the low setting- and this is good for 30 days of use. I have not yet verified this, but I did read a review that reported this time frame was actually conservative. Wow, guess you don't have to worry about wasting the batteries by falling asleep there! The globe diffuses the light well and I have not had to take the globe off in order to see properly. The intermittent SOS light would be really useful in an emergency situation for say when you are camping, and might lead rescuers to you. Additionally this light is a great size, about as tall as a 20oz soda, but a little wider. It is pretty light weight without batteries, and the three batteries add their weight as well. It is a great lantern for camping for all these reasons. If you are a motorcyclist or serious backpack camper you might prefer a smaller lantern, but on the other hand you give up a lot of usefulness and functionality by doing so. For an emergency light, useful for reading, walking to the bathroom, kitchen or any other part of your home this lantern "Shines" brightly. The unit also has what they call a "Lifetime" warranty on the box, but of course that is only good as long as the company is in business, which hopefully will be a long time. It would be great for most campers and it really is the only lantern most of us would ever need, period. There are brighter lanterns, there are smaller lanterns and there are those that cost less- but this unit strikes a wonderful balance while still having a fair price and solid construction. God Bless ya!

Very sturdy and surprisingly bright for it's compact size. My friend ordered the GM Enbrighten with higher lumens at the same time and I was concerned that I'd made a mistake and spent too much for mine. When we camped together I was very pleased with my purchase as it appeared brighter, was more compact, and was much sturdier. It also takes half the batteries (GM takes either 4 or 8 D batteries based on the performance you want). Very happy with my purchase!!!
