My best guess would be because it is a flavoring as opposed to a natural ingredient.

Are they or are they not Anchor brand?

They are Arcor Brand. I am not sure if that is always the case when ordered. Luckily I ended up finding the Arcor brand at Big Lots. So I go there now.

Any cross contamination with peanuts or tree nuts?

The bag says, "May contain tree nuts".

If you want the best answer ask the manufacturer who make the candy. I don’t remember on the packaging a symbol for stating that this candy is made according to Jewish requirements. It’s great candy, usually not made in the USA. Good luck.
