Q: I'm not sure I got a manual. Can anyone tell me how to use the + and - functions? Random button mashing hasn't helped me!

A leaflet came within the box, writing small but still readable.The + and - functions would appear only to be used when adding/subtracting stored measurements as follows-1. Measure any two dimensions of a room and store the measurements in memory locations 1 and 2.2. Press ALL MEMORY CLEAR.3. Press M1, +, M2, then + to add the measurements, or M1, -, M2, then - to subtract them. The value of the calculation appears.4. To clear the display and do another measurement, press ALL MEMORY CLEAR.That's what it says on the leaflet.......good luck!.

Q: Will this item work outside in daylight ?

The measurement works in daylight / bright sunlight, but the laser red spot is not easy to see in bright sunlight, especially over distances of 5 metres, or more. The distance measurement system is ultra-sonic and not affected by light levels, but can be affected by steam / mist. The laser is low power (to comply with legal requirements) and hence the higher the ambient light level, the more difficult it is to see, plus the surface also will affect how easy it is to see. The unit does what I want of it, indoors and out, and for the price, is very good. I have used more expensive units in my work (engineering), and this works as well, but with fewer facilities.

Q: Does it measure in metric units?

The BIG button in the middle says "Feet/Metres"..... big hint!!!1

Q: The image doesn't show a power switch. Does this mean the battery must be removed when not in use?

No, it comes on when you press the laser or measure switch and goes off really quickly when you haven't touched a button for a while. I have left mine on the shelf for ages between uses, and the batteries were absolutely fine.
