His love of gardening is infectious and this book will inspire and teach you so much. Soon you'll be planting and growing so many good things! Review: He is super knowledgeable but really laid back - Charles Dowding is a UK gardener I found on Youtube. He is super knowledgeable but really laid back. This is a great book if you want to learn how he does his composting and compost mulch technique for gardening. He doesn't use the permaculture method of sheeting with wood-chips due to a major slug problem in the U.K. His Youtube videos are high-quality, check out a video to see if you like his style as the book is done in a similar vein.

Not what I expected... not really what I was looking for
The book is really nice, lots of pictures, but I didn't need another gardening book, I really didn't want ideas on how to store, or use my veggies to clean with, or for recipes. Guess I should have read the title more closely, it really is a nice book, but I wanted more info on the no dig gardening method, more info on compost, more on soil and the problems I may encounter and the advantages of this type of gardening, not the same old things i can get in any other gardening book out there. This one is like most of the others. If you really want to sell me on the idea of no dig gardening, you need to give me some real evidence that it works and more info about it, not fillers.

Beautiful
What a beautiful book! I love the author's videos on Youtube and I was glad to see his book includes the same level of beauty and depth of information. This isn't a book that was written from other books. It is a collection of hands on expert research that was taken from the field.

I have been essentially doing "no dig" for years, not calling it this, but the concept was the same. Charles has clarified the wonderful, easy "no dig" concept which can be done virtually in any size space, even a small space, and it's so much easier.... So "stop digging" and get to planting with good well fed soil. An Excellent source of information and knowledge is packed in this along with recipes and other great information from his partner Stephanie...a wonder book. Thanks Debbie P. Langley BC

As indicated by its subtitle, this book is ambitious in scope. It deals with a large variety of subjects normally found in two or three other books, fully and clearly. In particular, it deals with the important topics of composting and no-dig, which may give considerable relief to gardeners who would otherwise suffer from back problems, as well as our health services which would otherwise have to look after them. And our soils will be far healthier for being treated in this more natural way. What Charles Dowding and Stephanie Hafferty don't know and write about their subjects may not be worth knowing. It may not be a text for agronomists, but for anyone interested in growing their own vegetables in a temperate climate (my reason for buying it), I don't know a better book - and I've got many of them.

I've been following Charles Dowding on Youtube for about a year and I've been drooling over the pictures of the lunches made by Stephanie Hafferty during the No-Dig courses at Home Acres. Their combined knowledge of gardening, storing, cooking and preserving went into this book and the result is a masterpiece which teaches you so many important things about how to care for your own veg plot (- and flower beds!) and make the most of all seasons in the garden. It is packed full of photographs and really easy to understand. It features several pages on pests, which I found extremely useful, having had ALL pests imaginable on my allotment this year, as well as a chapter on making cosmetics from ingredients harvested from your own garden. How cool is that? I recommend this book to anyone: experienced gardener or allotmenteer in the making.
