These Prefilters Are Great!
*UPDATE - I have been using these pre filters for about three years now and they really do work well. Place one on the intake tube of your canister or hob filter and you will find that you have to clean the filter far less frequently. Just remove the Fluval pre filter once a week and run it under tap water to clean it. Then reinstall. You will be amazed at how much detritus these pre filters collect before it can ever get to the filter media in your HOB or canister filter. Over time they will wear out and need to be replaced. However, they are so inexpensive that it's really not an issue. Caveat: In a tank that is plagued by algae problems, the algae will grow on these pre filters and eventually render them useless. This is especially true of black beard algae which attaches itself to these filters with a vengeance. The water will pass through the algae attached to the pre filter and carry its spores back into your aquarium. Most algae problems are easily remedied with the use of a micron filter which removes spores before they can grow. Using a UV sterilizer also helps tremendously in keeping algal growth to a minimum. I use the Fluval Edge prefilters on the intake tubes of 3 Aquaclear 20 filters in 5.5 gallon aquariums, which I use as part of a sectional aquarium setup for raising fancy guppies. I also have a 10 gallon tank as part of my guppy sectional setup, with an Eheim 2213 canister filter, which I have also added one of these prefilters to. The Eheim's intake strainer is small enough to slip the Fluval prefilter on, and the Aquaclear 20 is the same filter used by Fluval with its Edge 6 and 12 gallon tanks, so the fit is perfect. I use these prefilters for two reasons. The first is to prevent guppy fry from being sucked up into the main filters. The second is to prevent much of the detritus in my tanks from reaching the Aquaclear 20's mechanical filter sponge. I have noticed that the mechanical filters in the Aquaclears stay much cleaner since I've added the Fluval prefilters. I remove the prefilters once a week or so, rinse them well under tap water since they absorb alot of detritus, and place them back on the filter intake tubes. And since the main filter already has a biofilter, I don't have to worry about rinsing the prefilter in tank water or filtered water. The chlorinated tap water works fine. These filters really have made it easier to keep my Eheim and Aquaclear filters cleaner, and they are well worth the money. Especially when purchasing them in a three pack. Highly recommended!

Works great with Fluval C3 HOB, but be aware that they clog up very quickly almost rendering the filter inoperative.
Purchased these to use on a Fluval C3 power filters intake; first off, I was expecting baby shrimp from a few of my berried shrimp I had, and, needed something to block the intake so they wouldn't get sucked up, and two: after having the poly filter pad clog up a handful of times since I've installed the Fluval C3 (indicator protruding) after only about a week to a week and half between poly filter pad changes, I decided, I needed to get a Pre-Filter that I could easily clean, so I could prolong the filter pads replacements in the HOB filter. The only problem is these Pre-Filters are not of the coarse variety; they have a fine mesh that is very good at trapping particles; I would almost say these could be classified as the "filter floss" of sponge Pre-Filters from my experience, and I've found on two occasions where the water was not even coming out of the spout that supplied water to the trickle wet/dry media the filter has; along with water barely trickling from the HOB return. At first glance I look at the sponge, and visibly saw the Pre-filter didn't have what appeared to be any sort of mass accumulation of debris that would indicated It needed to be cleaned/ and or replaced. I first thought that maybe the pump was going bad, but to my surprise I decided to swap out the Pre-Filter with a clean one, and the filter had significantly better flow; albeit not the flow it had when I first purchased these Pre-Filter brand new that I've cleaned a handful of times now. The most recent is when I did aquarium maintenance (water change, gravel cleaning, plant trimming and cleaning the Fluval HOB) after less than 24 hours I returned to the filter just dripping water from the return, I swapped out the Pre-Filter with a clean one, and it worked normally again at least for a few days until it needs to be swapped out again. That being said the Fluval C3 filter is probably just very sensitive to using a Pre-Filter of this density, so I wont knock any stars off since the product has no faults, but for my application, I find it cumbersome to have to swap out a Pre-Filter after less than 24 hours in a worst case scenario. I will be looking at finding a more coarse Pre-Filter for the Fluval C3.

Perfect for TopFin Power Filter 10
I had no idea what to expect, so I decided to write a review suited to my situation for future purchasers benefits. These worked really well. I have a 10 gallon tank and am using a Topfin 10 power filter. I keep both fish (primarily tetras) and shrimp. The primary reason I bought this was to cover my intake, in hopes that when my Shrimp breed, the fry would not be sucked up. These were slightly bigger than I expected. The picture makes it appear a bit tapered but they are not - just round cylinders. They slipped right onto the intake, no problem. Perfect fit. I saw no noticeable difference in flow from my filter. I would recommend for TopFin Power Filter 10.

Work well but small pore size
These work really well in my betta tank to prevent any issues but they do have small pores so any plant melt or larger waste doesn't get filtered out and settles to the bottom it is stuck on the outside of the sponge.

Just what my betta needed
I have an Imagitarium Frameless Freshwater 6.8 gal tank that has an internal filter system. The water output (back into the tank from the filter) is located under the water level in the tank. After setting the output as low as it could go, the flow was still way too strong for my betta in the tank. He would hide in the corner to avoid the water movement. I purchased this sponge in hopes it would mitigate the flow of the water. It worked PERFECT! It fit perfectly over the output valve without any modifications and immediately reduced the water movement in the tank. My betta is now happy as a clam and can comfortably move about the tank. Shipping was also incredibly fast - I received a notification of shipping just hours after purchase.
