Great texture and drying time!
If you love a creamy texture and a quick drying time, Lukas 1862 paints are for you. The 1862 line has beautiful pigments, easily blends with other oil colors, and gives blended paints the same properties. I love the over-night drying time because it allows me to move forward with my painting. It has a very rich consistency and smoothness. The pigment and the binder have never separated in any of my tubes of Lukas 1862 Oil paints. I think they are a great product. As an artist, I enjoy using Lukas 1862 paints.

Magnificent Magenta!
The Lukas brand is good throughout their color range: Great pigment density, High tinting strength, with excellent permanence and lightfast ratings. Also noteworthy is the addition of Bee's Wax to the oil-vehicle which preserves the paint (and your paintings) since it is a natural anti-fungal. Bee's-wax promotes consistent texture from tube-to-tube regardless of color, which is a real advantage since you have one less problem to think about. When you're mixing paint, you have enough to consider. There's no reason to add an extra layer of complexity by worrying about some colors drying faster than others or mixing mediums with different ratios for each color. Bee's-wax also helps Lukas paints dry faster. They don't exactly dry overnight like alkyds, but the paint film will "set up" enough to allow reworking, over-painting and glazing. There is plenty of "open time" as with traditional oils, but being able to work on a painting the next day is a great boon for pros or weekend warriors like me. I chose this particular color to review because it is so special. It is BEAUTIFUL! This 1862 Lukas magenta compares favorably to premium-brands' like Maimeri, Sennelier, Old Holland, Williamsburg. Don’t let the difference in price fool you. THIS is the GOOD STUFF! The color-swatch you see here does not even begin to do it justice. In mass-tone it's quite dark, much darker than you see here. It produces powerful or subtle glazes because it is so transparent. Yet in tints, it can be very opaque without losing its identity. You really have to experience it for yourself. Whenever I use this color (typically in floral paintings) I always get comments on the rich, vibrant, intensely-saturated magentas this paint produces. But don't imagine this is just for high-chroma flower paintings! It is one of the few magentas that can hold it own with Phthalocyanine pigments! By itself this magenta is stunning, but in transparent layers with pthalo-blue it is electrifying! Foreground water achieves that magic luminescence. Reflections in water, metal or glass seem realer-than-real. In realistic work, I often find I must “dirty” this color just to make it more believable. Mix this with a good pthalo green to create mysterious magnetic darks. Tint that mixture with zinc-white and a touch of transparent yellow (hansa, primary or cad-light) to make deep shadows or light-cool distant grays that seem to float into eternity. If you can discipline yourself to use it sparingly, those mixtures make distant mountains more majestic and stormy skies surreal. No matter how you use it (or over-use it) this color is like poetry for your retinas! Experienced artists already know that high-quality paint is a better bargain in the long run. It mixes properly so you get the color you want faster, with less fussing. That saves time, saves paint and makes painting more enjoyable. Good paint like this has greater pigment load so you need less, so that's also a bargain. But because Lukas is imported directly to Jerry's, there is one less layer of profit, which makes this brand a super bargain. So, for certain special colors like this luscious and versatile magenta, it is a super-duper bargain. If you are a pro or hobbyist, try at least a few tubes of Lukas. If you crave gorgeous pinks, purples, violets... If you need to shade bright reds or make reflected light in shadows glow... If you're tired of wasting paint trying to mimic natural floral colors and shades... If you need authoritative transparent darks, dreamy ethereal glazes and delicate tints... Try THIS color! But use caution! It is addictive! In fact, that is the only fault I can find with this magnificent magenta. It is SO deliciously lovely that I must force myself to use it sparingly. It can easily overpower common sense so that your artistic license might get revoked! I would paint an entire wall with this, and given its tremendous covering power, I just might! I cannot accurately estimate the number of square feet I have slathered with this stuff, ... in at least fifty paintings, and I still have half a tube left! I'll bet I could varnish at least one whole wall in my studio with one tube. It's THAT potent! You don't just "see" this color. You drink it with your eyes! Make yourself a smoothie with raspberries, blueberries, orange juice, grape juice, yogurt, and one ripe banana. Look at it. Drink it. THAT is what this color is like.
