Works great and lasts a long time
I own 4 DMT diamond stones. Unfortunately, everyone I have bought before this one has defects. I am happy with this stone though. My extra coarse stone is missing diamond coverage all along the edges and has a big blotch missing in one of the corners. My DMT fine stone has extremely bad grit contamination that you can not only feel, but can hear, when sharpening. So, I was happy when I finally got a DMT stone that didn't have grit contamination and has complete diamond coverage including along the edges. It is unfortunate that it took 4 stones to get a good one. To say DMT's quality control is subpar is an understatement. I kept seeing good reviews and so thought maybe I was getting lemons, just a random bad one. But no. Everyone stone except this one had significant defects. That being said.... even with the defects the stones work well enough and will last. I know it's odd to say so much negative and have a 5 star review. That is simply because this stone was exactly what it should have been. No grit contamination, no missing coverage and a great stone. It cuts fast and leaves a uniform scratch patter. It is well built and will last year's making it a great buy for $50. If you can get a DMT diamond stone without any significant defects, then you're getting a good buy. These stones will last for a very long time if you take care of them and can cut any steel type including super steels like s110v or s90v.

Best choice if you only want one stone
I've used this for sharpening dozens of kitchen knives, pocket knives, straight razors, chisels, and planes to great success and for a while it was my only stone. At 1200 grit, it puts a fine enough edge on a blade for most knives and a serviceable edge on chisels (and maybe planes depending on what you're using them for). You may want coarser grits if you have chips in the blade, as it will take quite a while to grind out anything large or even moderately sized, and you will definitely want coarser stones if you are reshaping a blade profile, changing edge angle, or flattening chisels or planes. Similarly, you may want a higher grit for refining edges; I leave some knives at this level but go up to 4000-8000 on some, and higher still on planes and straight razors. It has held up very well and after many years and hundreds of sharpenings it still works great. You may notice staining on the surface, especially after using it on non-stainless steels and the grit can sometimes get gummed up, presumably from skin cell or oils from your hands. Usually, dish soap will do a good job cleaning it, but when I notice that it's not cutting as well I will occasionally use Barkeeper's Friend to really get the surface clean. It's a pretty harsh cleaner though, so I try to keep that to a minimum to avoid shortening the life of the stone. The biggest drawback to this stone is that I do think the feedback from the surface could be better, especially if you're a beginner to bench stone sharpening. It was my first bench stone and it definitely took me a while before I felt really comfortable maintaining an angle, reliably achieving a burr, and not goofing up my blades. Fortunately it's hard to do much damage at 1200 grit, but I do think that starting with a slightly coarser (maybe 600-1000 grit) water stone and a very cheap or even thrift-store level knife would be a better way to learn bench stone sharpening.

Beginner, Impressed!
So I have had a few lock-back pocket knives kicking around my life for a few years now. One Gerber has been with my for over a decade. Over the last few months, I have realized how I have completely neglected blade care all this time. I use them purely for home use, work use, and have yet had a chance to use them as an "outdoorsman" would... someday! Some of my knives have gotten nastily damaged and dulled over the years.... some just dulled. I have a "pro" motorized, ceramic kitchen knife sharpener, and out of of desperation I TRIED using it on my oldest Gerber. Nope, can't barely fit the thick blade in the slots, and even so, the original bevel must be at too large of an angle. It looks like it tried to grind down a secondary bevel. I know that it cuts at 20 degrees. After research, watching sharpening methods using everything from sandpaper, to whetstones, to splash & go stones, to diamond bench sharpeners, I settled on this one for all my general sharpening. After trying to emulate the methods I had watched, I cannot believe it, but I already have had HUGE results! My oldest most damaged Gerber, pitted, dulled, etc.... After doing the work 10x slower than anyone else, I managed to restore the edge, get ride of the pitting AND properly sharpen the blade all on this stone... Didn't even use a coarser stone before hand to "repair the edge"... I got it to the point that it cuts through paper smoothly, through the full blade with no jagged tears... I do not have a proper way to strop the bevel off yet, so I did some horizontal blade sharpening pulls, alternating until the bevel pretty much was gone, and I used my work mat in place of a leather strop in the meantime until I can get one... It can't arm hair shave very well just yet, but I am sure until I can get more of the proper gear to remove the bevel and I work on my technique, I am convinced I will be able to get to that point. I watched a video of a guy sharpening a blade on this stone, and had such good technique, was able to shave his arm hairs straight away. I will get there! Meantime, fantastic bench stone! DO NOT BUY CHEAP DIAMOND STONES! Those are not made properly where the diamond is not ionized into the metal, and are just stuck on with adhesive, meaning it will wear down and rub off completely over time. This stone will last for years in comparison!

Very good quality sharpening solution. I use it to sharpen plane irons and chisels and I've not seen the slightest sign of fatigue after several months of use. Guaranteed flatness, and no need for lapping... ever. To use, all that is needed is a small amount of liquid to lubricate (the manufacturer recommends water -- glass cleaner is another option with no adverse effects), then sharpen, then wipe off the slurry (the swarf is sign that it's working). The plate is quite heavy, but it helps keeping everything in place while sharpening. Let it dry and store it away. easy. I've found I can obtain results faster by applying very little pressure -- no need to force weight down into the stone to sharpen. There is a small break-in period, after which I started getting bluish halos (photo attached). It's a tell-sign cleaning is due, which can be done easily by a good scrubbing with a toothbrush and some kitchen/sink cleansing powder agent (such as calcium carbonate and sodium carbonate). The surface can also reportedly be cleaned with a high-polymer eraser. Even easier! Very responsive support from the manufacturer. Very satisfied customer! The prices for the coarse, fine, and extra-fine stones fluctuate somewhat, I'd recommend setting a watch.

My stone had a manufacturing issue that I discovered after the return window had closet but DMT support solved it in an excellent way. I'm very happy with my stone and the support experience I had couldn't be better. Fully recommended!
