BulkSupplements has done us a great favor by offering us L-Theanine in bulk form. This is usually a rather hard to find and expensive supplement. This is the cheapest I've seen it. It is pure and it is the real deal and packaged in the U.S., so you know you're not getting fake stuff from China. L-Theanine is the stuff in tea that makes you feel calm and relaxed. I was once placed temporarily on Xanax for anxiety attacks that had no explanation. Then I looked up the side-effects of Xanax and found out how addictive that stuff was and how it has brought so many onto a downward spiral of misery. I started looking for more-friendly, all-natural alternatives, and that's when a web search revealed L-Theanine as an alternative to me. I didn't stop the Xanax cold turkey, but within two weeks, I was able to titrate and wean myself off of it entirely and replace it with L-Theanine. I then slowly reduced the amount of L-Theanine I was taking down to 100 mg. I now only take it because it makes me feel better during generally stressful situations, not because I need it. This a very powerful amino acid. It can also take the edge off of caffieine if you use that as a smart drug. L-Theanine + Caffeine = a feeling of clear focus without the crash or jitteryness. No daily recommended value has been established, but I would suggest taking 200 mg once to twice daily (400 mg max) and starting out from there. I've found that if I go over 400mg, I start to feel really drowsy and sluggish. Each person is different, so you may have to vary this amount for you. Also, if you want lucid dreams or have trouble sleeping, this is an excellent addition to melatonin. L-Theanine is for the most part non-toxic. There are no documented cases of anyone overdosing on it, but to be on the safe side, handle it like care like any other supplement. The package says on it, "Do not use if you are taking blood pressure medication." This does not necessarily mean that you can't use it. I am currently taking blood pressure medication for high blood pressure and I am doing just fine on L-Theanine. I have also never heard of anyone one high blood pressure medication having problems with L-Theanine. I believe this statement is just a warning so that the company can protect itself from liability in the rare event that someone does have a reaction. If you want to be 100% safe, talk to your doctor first. But, remember, this is pretty much a refined tea leaf-type extract without the caffeine stuff. If you drink lots of green tea, then you probably are already getting lots of L-Theanine in your diet.

I've been using this for about a week. I got it to help with sleeping,... it does seem to work, boosting both sleep and focus. I kind of got it on a lark, I'd never tried it before. I wasn't obvious to me that something that comes from green tea would help with sleeping. There were lots of positive reviews so I decided it was worth a try. For me it seems to work great. I'd say it definitely promotes a calm focus affect. This stuff takes a while to dissolve, the powder is fine, so I believe this is a characteristic of the Theanine itself. ....At the rate I'm using this stuff it's going to last a very long time. I've used several Bulk Supplements products and so far they all seem to be of good quality. A number of people seem to need a way to make small measurements, Bulk Supplements doesn't provide any form of measuring spoon. I bought a set of very small measuring spoons from Amazon that does the trick nicely. It works for this and any other small dose supplements. It has the odd name of Norpro Mini Stainless Steel Measuring Spoons, Set of 5 (tad, dash, pinch, smidgen and drop). It's difficult to measure how accurate you are measuring small amounts of powders and liquids, so they loose the fractions of a teaspoon and come up with frankly hilarious and imprecise names for the size of the spoons. A dose of L-Theanine using these spoons is between a 'pinch' and a 'dash'. To be more precise(the right way) you would want to use a very accurate weighing device, which uses weight which is more accurate versus volume. I guess I'm willing to be a bit flexible on the exactness and go with 'the ease of use' spoons. You want to move a knife across the top of the spoon to get some consistency with the measurements. As others have mentioned the reseal on the bags really isn't very good, consider transferring the powder to another container. ...Otherwise the bag is a nice weight foil lined bag that gets the product to you in good condition. So,.. so far I'm really happy I tried this stuff. I think you could be happy too, thinking everyone could use more focus and calm.

If you take L-Theanine, this bulk product will save you a LOT of money. I first learned of L-Theanine after reading Daniel Amen's book, Healing ADD . It's one of the supplements Amen recommends for certain types of ADD / ADHD. We'd gotten the book to learn how to help our nephew, but as we were reading it, my wife suggested that I had one of Amen's seven ADD types. I took his online test, and sure enough, I scored in the area that my wife thought I would. And, one of the supplements for addressing it is L-Theanine. Keep in mind that for therapeutic doses (such as when treating ADD), one must take more than the "recommended" daily dose. For the type of ADD I was dealing with, Amen often recommends 600 mg/day. I took the pills and WOW, what a difference. I found that 600 mg/day helped, but I'm guessing Amen's recommendation is for a child. As a 215# man, I found I got better results at 900mg/day. With that dosage, I'm MUCH calmer and I feel more focused and in control. However, buying L-Theanine in pill form is expensive. So, I bought a Pill Machine and some capsules and started making my own. MUCH CHEAPER. A couple of tips: For absorbtion, L-Theanine needs to be taken on an empty stomach. After much reading on this, I've learned that it fights with other amino acids for crossing the blood-brain barrier. If you just take L-Theanine by itself, it doesn't have to fight and it gets absorbed much better. ALSO -- if you also take L-Tyrosine, the two should be taken separately, both on an empty stomach. Reason: They are both amino acids, and they will fight for which one gets to cross the blood-brain barrier. Taking them at the same time greatly reduces their effectiveness. After taking both Theanine and Tyrosine for over two years, I can attest to this. I also learned that L-Theanine has a slightly more sedative effect than L-Tyrosine, so I take my L-Theanine at night before bed, and my L-Tyrosine first thing in the morning when I get up -- OR, if I happen to get up in the middle of the night (I keep the L-Tyrosine on the counter in my master bathroom). Bonus: By taking both L-Tyrosine and L-Theanine, I was able to cut my blood pressure medications in half, and I have lower blood pressure than I had prior to taking these amino acids. Amazing. Bottom line, though: Whatever the reason you're taking L-Theanine, this bulk powder will save you a LOT of money.

(I no longer take this, see comment section) There is no denying that this has an effect. Wow. A lot to say already and its only my first dose. First, let me say I am highly skeptical about supplements. 10 years ago I lived with hippie vegans and I was exposed to all kinds of supplements in that house and found none of them to be very effective, except L-theanine, which I took once, and was surprised by the very slight but still noticeable lift and calm it gave me. I stopped almost all supplements years ago because I decided they were likely a waste of money and I just didnt have the cash to burn to try each one to find out of they worked for me or not. I held on to a very few (milk thistle, dandelion, and burdock... these proved VERY effective for cleaning the system). Anyway, I deal with anxiety (at times some very severe panic attacks) and some depression... plus several other current life issues along with those things. I find myself lacking in motivation. and unable to concentrate or efficiently prioritize things these days. I give up often, overwhelmed... just doing the sort of bare minimum to make sure life doesnt totally fall apart and the bills get paid. The L-theanine arrived today and I accidently took about twice the amount I was supposed to right off the bat, with some of my coffee. I let it dissolve under my tongue for the most part. (I had a meal about 1/2 hour before taking the L-theanine). MY GOODNESS... I FELT THIS STUFF IMMEDIATELY. There was no way I was imagining it. I took more than I really want to take in one dose from now on, but for a good 30 minutes I actually felt ... hard to describe... but very different than I had been feeling just before taking it. It was definitely CALMING... I would say the amount I took was TOO calming... sedative-like but not in a sleepy way. I was a bit loopy from half a teaspoon. I almost tripped over my own feet a few times. Its an hour later and I feel far less irritable than I usually do .Its making me realize how touchy I have been for a long while, in fact. I didnt start this supplement to address my irritability (until now, I didnt realize how bad my irritability had become) but it is nontheless addressing it. I am calm, and I am feeling just really peacefully alert. I feel more free, more accepting. less worried and less stressed. I will most certainly update in a few weeks to show how it works for me ongoing. My plan right now is to cycle on and off of this ... skipping a day or two here and there. So far, so good, and rest assured... there is a noticeable effect to L-theanine. YMMV
