Magpie Murders is a bestselling mystery thriller novel by Anthony Horowitz, known for his clever, layered storytelling and modern takes on classic detective fiction. The story follows Susan Ryeland, a book editor working for a publishing house. She has spent years editing the successful crime novel series written by author Alan Conway, featuring the fictional detective Atticus Pünd, who solves murders in traditional English village settings. Everything changes when Susan receives Conway’s final manuscript, titled Magpie Murders. At first, it looks like another classic whodunit set in a quiet village called Pye Hall, filled with suspicious characters, hidden motives, and a mysterious death. However, as Susan reads further, she notices something strange—important chapters are missing from the manuscript. When she begins investigating, she realizes that the fictional story inside the book may be connected to real events in the author’s life. Soon, Susan is pulled into a dangerous real-world mystery involving secrets, betrayal, and even murder. The novel cleverly shifts between two layers: the fictional detective story of Atticus Pünd and Susan’s real-life investigation into the manuscript’s hidden truth As both stories unfold, the boundaries between fiction and reality begin to blur. Clues hidden inside the manuscript mirror real-life events, and Susan must uncover what really happened before she becomes part of the mystery herself. The novel is known for its “story within a story” structure, inspired by classic Agatha Christie-style detective fiction but with a modern psychological twist. It combines traditional murder mystery elements—suspects, clues, and red herrings—with a metafictional puzzle that challenges the reader to solve both layers of the case. Themes include truth vs fiction, authorship, jealousy, ambition, and hidden motives, making it not just a crime story but also a commentary on storytelling itself. Overall, Magpie Murders is a highly engaging and cleverly constructed mystery that appeals to readers who enjoy classic detective novels, complex plots, and unexpected twists. Review: Cleverly Worked Story- or Should I Say Stories. - Written with lots of layers of meaning. At first you just want to finish the Atticus Pund story - but isn't that the point? Horowitz is demonstrating the reader's sheer delight in reading a traditional detective story. Here is the paradox of the author stuck with a detective and a series which the public can't get enough of, but which the author is totally fed up with. All he wants to do is kill him off and write some serious fiction. But as with Conan Doyle or Christie, this is the very thing which has made them great. I thoroughly enjoyed the book - both murder stories. Horowitz is a masterful writer and is particularly good at getting the reader to care about his characters and to enter their world. I thought his last book, Moriarty, was brilliantly written but let down by it's own cleverness. Clearly readers were irritated by the huge twist near the end. I wonder if the self analysis which seems to be going on beneath the layers of voices in Magpie Murders, is an answer to that criticism. Horowitz is such a good writer he can turn his mind to most detective/mystery/adventure styles - Sherlock Holmes, James Bond etc. But it's almost too easy for him. Perhaps he would like to do something different, and yet he seems to understand the reader's insatiable appetite for more and more of the same. I did hesitate before reading this book because I was so annoyed by the way he set the reader up for a fall in Moriarty. But I am glad I did. He stuck with the story - if on two levels, and the reader was taken into his confidence. The artifice or trickery was for our pleasure, not the author's joke at the reader's expense. The two stories interlinked in a clever way. I thought it worked well and recommend the book to others. Review: Llegó en perfecto estado - El libro llegó en perfecto estado. Es un libro de bolsillo, tiene el tamaño de letra acorde a esto.
