Great product for small laptops
The Logitech Speaker Lapdesk N550 is a very nice lapdesk if you have a small laptop. It is actually smaller than I was anticipating, but is perfect for my 13" Macbook Pro. This is one of the smaller laptops on the market, and even then the computer slightly covers up the edges of the speakers and the desk is only slightly deeper than the laptop. I would not use this for anything bigger than a 13" laptop. There is no room on this desk if you are the type that uses a mouse. The desk sits at a nice angle for typing on your lap. I have found that the angle is so nice, that I leave my computer on it even when I am sitting at a desk and typing. Two clips at the bottom keep the laptop from sliding off and are just the right height so that they don't protrude above the surface of my MacBook Pro.. The cloth that covers the bottom seems pretty durable and does not irritate my skin, even when wearing shorts. The sound quality from the speakers is very good, much better than I was expecting actually. The volume up/down/mute buttons on the side are nice, but a bit superfluous if you own a MacBook and can just use the F10,F11,F12 keys. My laptop recognized it upon plug in, but I did have to go into the sound settings to change the output device from the internal speakers to the N550 lapdesk. All in all a great product, and does exactly what I wanted it to, and is comfortable to use, doesn't take up a lot of space. I would definitely recommend this for owners of small laptops.

Wow
For a mere seventeen smackeroos, this is an amazing little product. I think well of Logitech in general, and although I wouldn't dream of paying the MSRP for this laptop desk, it's a steal at the current price. I use it with an 11.6" Acer Aspire One netbook, and I wouldn't recommend it for anything larger; even mine overlaps the speakers a bit on each side, though not enough to cut off the sound. A 14" would, I think, be too large for it no matter what the specs say. (I think the one in the picture is 10".) The sound is big. The speakers aren't great (you didn't really expect Bose quality in a plastic lapdesk, did you?) but they're _very_ good for the price. I thought my netbook had decent speakers until I plugged it into this thing. (I use it to play mp3s and listen to "Internet radio," and watch an occasional video/film.) It's also fairly effective at allowing my netbook to cool down, but mine doesn't run all that hot to begin with. I wouldn't count on this to help much with a laptop that runs very hot. The USB cable, as other reviewers have said, tucks into a groove on the back of the lapdesk and can be switched from one side to the other just by untucking it. So if your free USB port is on the left side of your computer, that's not a problem. Bottom line: it's an excellent product that does exactly what it's supposed to do and does it well at a great price. Just don't expect it to do any _more_ than it's supposed to do.

It'll do
I was looking for a laptop solution that did 3 things: 1) make it comfortable on my legs/knees when using it in bed, 2) prevent it from sliding around, and 3) Keep the laptop cool. I wasn't looking for speakers, although it's a nice addition. The padding is slightly disappointing in that it is very thin. There's a hard plastic that creates the round shape of the underside, and a sort of spongey covering. But at the edge (near the knees) it feels almost as hard as the plastic underneath. The size of this thing is just silly. Not many laptops will fit on it properly. It could be meant for portable DVD players I guess. I STRONGLY recommend taking measurements of your laptop before buying this. The back feet on my laptop are just on the back edge so they hold it in place just barely, but it can slide off, and it makes it easier to topple back if the desk is tilted or picked-up. I would love to chop off half an inch from each side to add just 1 inch to the back. I'd increase my rating one star for that one important inch. The material on the bottom is textured, which helps keep it still on your legs. The front flaps prevent the laptop from sliding forward, -BUT- it makes you lose half an inch of vertical space, which for me means the back legs of my laptop fall off the back, and it's not well balanced. If the flaps are left down, there is a slight lip that will should prevent sliding forward, and you can't tell by looking but those dark curves around the speakers are raised rubber, and they help as well. What I have ended up doing is around while sitting in bed, so the thin end is on my knees (they're knobby and stick up, so this levels the surface and takes pressure off of them). This doesn't have a fan on it unfortunately, but the hard surface does keep the laptop cooler than a lap or blankets because there is a little lift from the surface. The speakers are a dramatic improvement from my laptop's speakers, which distorted sound at a certain volume. These have better bass, and can play much louder than a laptop's built-in speakers. The volume Up/Down/Mute buttons affect the Windows 7 control panel the same as the buttons on the laptop itself. It may be important to note that the speakers will drain your battery faster even when not playing music. Overall, I like it better than not having it. I wish I could change some things, but I couldn't find anything that had my exact specifications in other comparably-priced cooling pads. I think I will attempt some low-tech customizing to make it more handy for me.

Great Sound - Comfortable Lapdesk
Logitech Speaker Lapdesk N550 This little lapdesk is perfect for smaller laptops and netbooks, as not only does it provide me with a comfortable & stable platform on which to place my computer, but the speakers provide quality sound beyond belief. When I plug this lapdesk into my little netbook you would be amazed at the quality of sound the N550 provides at a very low price. As a family we frequently will sit in the living room and listen to music from itunes or YouTube, these LogiTech lapdesks fill the room with quality sound. They work so well in fact, that the quality of the speakers on a laptop or netbook is no longer a factor in deciding which laptop or netbook to buy, because I know that I will be hooking the computer up to one of these comfortable lapdesks and getting sound the internal laptop/netbook speakers just cannot match. Like all Logitech products, I find the quality of the lapdesk itself outstanding. The padding is very comfortable and it couldn't possibly be easier to use. The N550 is a great value. I highly recommend it.

Great lapdesk for smaller computers!
This is the first lapdesk I've owned, so I can't really compare it to others. I have a 13.3" Macbook Pro, and this lapdesk is absolutely perfect for it's size. If your laptop is ANY bigger than 13" (maybe 14" can slide), it'll hang off the edge, cover the speakers more, and ultimately be too big. As far as the speakers go, they're a great improvement from the built in laptop speakers. It has more bass, and a fuller sound instead of a crappy bright speaker sound from the built in speakers. Also it can be much louder than the built in speakers for macs, which is awesome for watching movies and rocking out to music. The laptop does cover half of the speakers, but I believe it's made to be this way because the black rubberized edge on the speakers keep the laptop from sliding. Even so, the sound is not altered or lessened by them being slightly covered up. The lapdesk cushion on the bottom is pretty thin (which is why I only gave 4 stars, otherwise it deserves 5). If you're looking for extreme comfort and a squishy bottom like the as seen on tv one, I wouldn't get this product. I believe this cushion is comfy, but after time it might not be ideal to have on your lap. For me it's fine though, and lifts up the laptop enough for a comfortable viewing angle. Also it keeps my lap cool, unlike if the computer was just sitting on my legs. The lapdesk actually does have a slight dip on the top, allowing air underneath the computer so it doesn't overheat, which is also perfect for my macbook. Overall, I strongly recommend this lapdesk if you're looking for an improvement in your laptop sound while keeping your legs cool and comfy. Just make sure your laptop will fit!

15.6 laptop fits great, sounds great!
I purchased this laptop desk for my 15.6" laptop. I was afraid it would be too small or the sound would be blocked. It works great! The sound isn't "amazing" but for my day to day use and occasional video watching, it is perfect. I highly recommend this item - especially at this price. Notes: My price $18.98. Used on a Lenovo Z560 15.6" laptop running Windows 7. I plugged the usb from the lapdesk to my laptop and within a few seconds the lapdesk was working with no effort on my part. Approximately 1" of the lapdesk sticks out on either side of the laptop. I couldn't tell any real difference in the sound when I uncovered the speakers. The sound is significantly louder than my laptop sound. The lapdesk includes volume up, down, & mute buttons on the right side. There is enough room for air to flow underneath the laptop for ventilation. There is a track along the back of the lapdesk to hide the excess usb cord in. You can run the usb cord to the left or right side of the laptop. The desk tilts slightly for more comfortable typing. The bottom of the desk is padded. There are 2 tabs on the front of the desk that pop up to prevent the laptop from sliding off.

Lapdesk speakers will not work with the laptop it is intended for.
It looks good and is a great laptop rest to help stabilize sitting on the laptop. It is not necessarily plug and play. I got it for my wife's 15 inch Toshiba Satellite laptop and have yet to get it to work. We tried each port, removed and re-installed the sound drivers Still not working. We both are running Win 8.1, factory installed. For kicks, I tried it on my 17 inch HP Envy and, after changing the speakers properties to use the USB speakers as the default, it worked fine on my laptop, which is too large and cover the speakers. The sound is really good for the price (hooked up to my laptop); better than the factory laptop speakers. That proves it is not defective, it just does not work with hers. My wife does like the good points of it so she is going to use it just as a laptop lapdesk without using the speakers. It does angle up the laptop which she likes and it does soften the sound of the laptop speakers too. Great price if the speakers worked on her smaller laptop.

Lightweight, High Quality Speaker--Lapdesk
My son and I both own Toshiba netbooks that are 10.1 inches. The ONLY drawback to that particular netbook is the speaker quality. For some reason, only Toshiba knows, they decided to place the speakers on the BOTTOM of said laptop/netbook, whatever one calls it. So, I bought a speaker, for myself, that is of the USB variety, and is just one unit. It kind of resembles the shape of E.T. the Extra Terrestrial, LOL. Well, my little speaker is fabulous, (I also got it here so you can read that review if you are bored, or if you need a speaker of high quality), and it turned out that we ended up sharing that one. Since his little Toshiba is his main computer and mine is not, I loaned him the speaker most of the time. Well, his 16th birthday was on Thanksgiving so, my Perpetual fiance put me in charge of finding him a gift that he'd really love. I had never even heard of a speaker lapdesk until I began to peruse this site. I read all of the very helpful reviews and ended up getting him this one. He is absolutely thrilled with it but I'm not so tickled because the speakers are so loud that I must now utilize ear plugs when he is listening to music in his room on his computer! Anyhow, all kidding aside, he had some issues at first only with the sound quality on Skype, as he said everyone sounded high pitched. This was NOT the case with the music at any time. I told him that I had read something in one of the reviews about this and to check the directions. By the time I returned to check the progress, he told me that he had solved the issue. Not sure how he did this but, I did hear him on Skype later and he was not using his earplugs. All is well and my Perpetual is the hero of the day for getting him this, even though I did the leg work, or more like the finger work with typing and searching. I was really blown away with the sound that comes out of this desk and so was he. Not to mention, the whole deal is very lightweight, much more so than the adjustable laptop holder he was using before. I am not so certain that a computer larger than 13 or so would be a good fit for this particular model but, it is my understanding, from reading the plethora of reviews, that there is another model made by the same company. I have to say that I've had good luck all the way round with any, and all, Logitech items. If I hadn't just purchased another computer desk without speakers, I would also get one of these for myself. We both like the idea that the volume can be adjusted right from the desk as well. I've found that most USB speakers do not offer this bonus and one can only control the volume via the computer, itself. Also, the little "stoppers," that prevent the computer from slipping, are great and they fold up/down just in case a person would want to use this to do homework or for some other purpose. I totally, and quite highly, recommend this item. The price just cannot be beat and it's worth every penny spent. I hope this helps some of you to make a decision. Lisa H.
