For the price point, it works!
I'm basing my rating on my needs and the price point. There are Butt sets that are a LOT more money, more durable, and more features, so I'm not really comparing to those. If you have minimal use needs for some occasional testing and you're not going to be tossing it in a large bag of heavy telcom tools etc. then this is a great tool for your needs. It comes with alligator clamps and a 66 block tip as well as a coupler, so you've got what you need to test with various termination blocks/wires/jacks. I was able to hear the volume fine in a large data center too, so that was impressive. It does what I need and I didn't have to spend a few hundred on it, so I'm thrilled. Would I like to have a full fledged rugged butt set? Sure! Do I need it? Nope, not in my case. I just need to find a zipper pouch or something to store it in as I've been using the original little box, which is hard to cram everything back into. But for the price, I don't really expect a case to come with it.

Temporary turned permanent
I work as a PC and LAN tech for a 1000+employee company and I wanted my own butt-set so I wouldn't have to worry about borrowing the company one. I got this as a temporary measure and now 2 years later it's still in my pack and getting regular use. I figured I'd have upgraded to a fluke by now but I just haven't had a good reason to yet.My only complaints:The cord gets caught on stuff a lotThe double female connector it comes with and the clips are complete junkPick up some good alligator clips and put together a double female jack. For a fraction of the price this thing will work and be useful for wayyy longer than it should at this price.

Hope you can read Chinese
This looks like a nice little set. If you've used one before you're probably in business. If you are like me, and are un-initiated, beware. The outside of the box is in Chinese and English....at least the usual kind of Chinese English "SHENAN reserves the right that revising the technology will be not necessary to notice in advance." The box states that the colors that the units are manufactured in are "Hoariness", "Blue Grey" and "Other". BestDeal USA is only offering the Blue Grey on Amazon. That's good because ordering one in "hoariness" might cause problems on the domestic front. The inside instructions are the real problem. On one side of the single sheet the instructions are in Chinese, on the other side, the instructions are in Chinese - Not Chinese English, just Chinese. Maybe the one in hoariness color comes with French instructions. Seriously, the joke was on me because it is a real word. I was just ignorant of it. The Webster dictionary says that it means "grey or white, with or as if with age". For the price, I'd recommend that if you know how to use it, hoary up and buy one.

cheap but works for troubleshooting
Pros - price. also has adapters for screw type terminal blocks and 66-blocks (punch down type) and includes an inline coupler.Cons - instruction sheet is useless (minimal and in ChineseFor occasional use and basic troubleshooting this is just fine. I'm not a phone guy but it was easy enough to learn the basics with a little research on the web. One item I added to my kit was a DSL splitter (the kind you typically get with a DSL modem). If checking conventional home wiring, just remember which wires are positive (tip) and negative (ring). A basic connection is just two wires, By convention, black or green are 'tip' and red or yellow are 'ring'. If your wiring is twisted pair with banded stripes, then for each color, the white with colored stripe wire is the 'tip' and the colored with white stripe is 'ring.

Huge life saver for installing new phone lines or troubleshooting phones/fax
A few months ago a Centurylink tech came to service our phones and he had this huge ancient looking wireless contraption that he tested lines with. I got to use it and was really amazed at how much I needed one. No way, they’re crazy expensive. I found this one that does the same thing and it’s honestly the best thing ever. I do in-house IT work and it’s more than enough for what I need it for. I fixed my own troublesome fax line install that “couldn’t receive faxes” but I had mixed up the phone line. I found that error using this device. I don’t have to use a cordless phone that plugs into the wall to test lines anymore. Joining lines with new phone numbers is much faster now. So many things are not labeled in our punch blocks that it’s hard to guess but this makes my life so much easier!

Damaged at some point
Received a USED product that performed inconsistently, so I had to return it. I have a very technical background so I can get this device to work on occasions, but too much time was spent getting the product to work that I had little time for the testing. Because the wires are very thin, the volume level is very low and difficult to hear. The phone cable is very short and made for a one line phone. All cables are made for two line system. The connectors should be Black and Yellow OR Red and Green, not black and red. NOTE: The black and red cable, usually designed for post 1 are under the black cover, and the green and yellow, usually used for post 2 are on the RED connector. The item that I received was scratched and connectors were slightly bent. If the product works as intended, it would be worth the money. An equivalent product would cost much more. I hate giving a bad review to a product that may have worked, but was used and perhaps abused and returned. In any case I will seek to find a NEW product because for the price it is worth having. Hope that helps.

Perfect for my needs and great price
It is perfect for my needs. It is very small, about 2"x6" but does what I need very well and is lightweight. I have only wireless phones so this is nice to just plug-in. It has great attachments. True, it is made in Asia and I cannot read a word of the instructions or what is on the box or phone, but it is inexpensive and works well. Great price, especially for occasional use. No one seems to know if the 'Butt' is because it is carried on the Butt of linemen (has a belt/pocket clip), or it is because you can 'Butt-in' to a phone conversation. But, it works well, so I recommend, would buy again, and I hope this helps someone.
