Regardless of the manufacturer's voluntary warranty they can't limit you to a fixed period - any manufacturer warranty is IN ADDITION to your legal rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 whereby, according to the Consumer Association which publishes 'Which?', goods are faulty if they're not of Satisfactory quality As Described Fit for purpose And last a Reasonable length of Time (aide memoire acronym SADFART). This applies even if you buy items during a sale or with discount vouchers. It's a bit more complicated: you are entitled to a full refund whether an item is faulty or not (and you don't have to return the packaging but if an item's not faulty it's expected/civil to do so) "due to what’s called your ‘short-term right to reject’. After that, only expect an exchange, repair or part-refund. Within 6 months: The shop must prove the item wasn't faulty when the transaction took place. After that, you must prove it was." (says the Consumer Association). The ultimate cut-off is 6 years as that's the limitation period for taking items to court - google this for the details.
