And when I pushed the button....
We recently got a Rat Terrier from a no-kill rescue as a buddy for our Jack Russell. She's a good dog, but when outside, even after working with her a lot she will run... and run, and run. She'll be fine most of the of the time staying within the confines of our almost 4 acre yard, but then she'll get into a "mode" that is unbreakable with any amount of yelling, screaming, chasing, etc. After tiring of chasing her through thickets, and holding our breath as she crosses a busy street I did some research on training collars. I found this one to be one of the lowest cost, yet highly rated collars. Not wanting to lose her, we felt we had nothing else to lose by trying this collar. There are some questions as to how small of a dog this collar will fit: Ours weighs all of 11-12 lbs and this collar can be adjusted to fit her snugly enough that the metal prongs make contact. While the unit itself looks big on her, it doesn't affect her adversely in her movements or running around and playing - that is unless we activate it.Here's what we did: Set the shock to a very low level. Left the vibrate mode at 100, and set the initial "training" to use the beep. We found that the beep was enough initially to get her to attention and to get her to come back to us immediately when she started to wander a bit too far from us. We're not sure of her past, but as a rescue we know she was at least very neglected. That said, she's a little unsure of things and skittish most of the time. That may be why the beep was good enough. She jumped and looked around on the ground for where the noise was coming from, and then came running to us - for protection I imagine, but at the same time we were issuing commands for her to come back.We have only been using the collar for 4-3 days, but it's made a huge difference. We can now let both dogs out while we stay by the door and she comes back when told to do so. (Our Jack has always stayed within our property and very rarely needs to be told more than once to come back inside)When and if the beep no longer works we'll bump it up to vibrate. If the beep scared her as much as it did, I'm sure vibrate will work wonders too!Do some research online and find the best suggested way for you to use the training collar in your situation. Barking, running, jumping, etc.And now, a little about what you get - in the box is:-------------------------------------------------------------------An adjustable collar that will fit almost every sized dogA receiver that gets "mounted" on the collar (or your collar if it's the right width)A hand-held transmitter and a USB charger with wall adapterTwo different length prongs - one set for short hair, one for long hairA small LED light built into a plastic housing to test the prongs for shock - which also acts as a wrench to tighten the hex shaped prongsThe Receiver has an LCD display and the mode button changes the settings from Shock (with levels from 1 through 100), Vibrate (again 1 - 100), and Beep which has no level settings. There is also a nifty LED light built into the top of the receiver across from the antenna and it has a dedicated button to light it. Seems like it could be handy in the dark, though we haven't used it yet.Overall, it's made mostly of plastic and doesn't have an "expensive" feel. But it does seem durable. Time will tell.

Give it a try
I got this for our newly adopted Boston Terrier (she is around 5 yrs old). She barked at everything all the time, doors closing, cars driving by, sneezing, phone ringing. I was ready to get rid of her when I decided to try this collar (I did not want a bark activated collar, have seen too many issues with those). This collar has cut her barking and growling down a lot, but has not completely stopped her. I started trying just the beep, did nothing. The vibrate initially did nothing, but I turned it up to max and it works most of the time, unless she is really barking (someone at the door or some other startling event). If that happens, I do use the shock setting (set on 1) and she will stop. Problem is, the shock does not always work (or just does not phase her). No way to tell if the shock is working and she is ignoring it or if it is not delivering the shock (or if the probes are not touching her skin). I wish it had an option to do both shock and sound (or vibrate and sound). I have the longest prongs on it, so not sure what is going on with it.I am not crazy about the remote for this, the big button in the middle, which I think should be the activate button is the button that changes the mode. Stupid placement for that. The activate button is the one on the right side of the face. Many times I go to activate and end up changing the mode, then click to get it back to vibrate, and many times she has stopped, so no point in doing it since she will not correlate the buzz with 10 seconds after the barking. It should have a switch to change modes. The rechargeable battery in the collar lasts 4-5 days, the remote, not sure, I just charge it after doing the collar. One thing that is annoying is that the collar shuts off if no motion is detected (not sure on the exact timeframe), so when she is lying still and starts growling, the collar will not activate. I understand it makes the battery last longer, but is still an annoyance. No idea on how waterproof this is. Our dog is an indoor dog so it does not get wet with more than dew from the grass.Overall I am happy with it, but the poor layout of the remote really bugs me. The decent battery life and quick recharge keep it from being a 3 start rating. And just to those that say the shock is cruel, I have done it on myself, and while it stings, it is not unbearable.

Pretty good for the price.
For the price you can't really go too wrong, I have seen them on a chinese website (starts with ali....) for about half this much for a generic model, but then you end up waiting a month for shipping and who knows if it will actually work. We've had ours for about 3 months now and there are only a couple things that I would change... a backlight for the lcd so you could work this in the dark would be great...(one remote will control two collars so if you accidentally switch to the other collar which doesn't exist, your dog is just laughing at you while you cuss him out frantically pressing buttons and trying to hold the flash light on and make a cup with your hand so you can read the display). The second would be a low battery tone to warn you when the charge is running out. Oh, and you have to undo the strap to charge the thing or change the pairing number. Why they didn't put these on the top or bottom is beyond me. My remote I've charged one time and use constantly as a flashlight when we go out to potty at midnight every day, the collar itself I think I've charged four times in the three months. So far running strong. Never had a different brand to compare these to though. The dog stays pretty close so I'm not sure about range either, I can say at least 50' though, I use the buzzer feature to call him back when he goes around to the front of the house.
