Not cheap but is solid stainless steel and will last forever. Perfect dimensions and weight makes tamping down coffee as easy as possible.

Lulled into buying one of those Espresso machines after encountering one on holiday, they do make rather good coffee I have to admit. But then you're into the whole debate regarding cost, 'eco-friendliness', aluminium poisoning, plastics and hormones etc when restocking the disposable coffee pods, whether original brand or the numerous 3rd party sellers. So I looked for alternatives and found this idea. Mmm I thought, might wreck the machine, looks fiddly, the foil won't stick and they are 10p/foil to replace. Never mind, in their favour you can have your own coffee blend and help save the environment (and perhaps your own inner environment too!) Straight out of the box the idea works well. We have an essenza mini and the only hiccup was the extra pressure needed when pulling the locking arm down. It transpired this was because these steel pods have no flex compared to the disposable pods so slightly more force is needed to push it into it's 'loading chamber'. This appears to be of no material consequence so far and after a few uses the pods now load just like the disposables. There were no other issues encountered apart from the fact that you don't want to handle the spent pod till it's cooled down-they obviously get very hot! The fun starts with preparing the pod. So much choice, caff, decaff, fine, medium or coarse ground and what blend! I found that after tamping down the grounds (their tamping tool is ideal, just the right weight) having about 3mm below the rim was about right for volume. The foil lid sticks on easily and firmly (but of course make sure the rim contact surface is clean and dry first). Getting the foil off later is easy too with no tearing. In sum a good idea that works well in practice. To get around the 'labour-intensive' criticism, firstly it's not healthy to drink too much coffee daily (and those disposable pods just ask you to keep brewing up) so this becomes a rate limiting step and anyway, you can always make up a batch to last a few days and keep them in the fridge for freshness.
