Very Cute Story About Giving and not Hoarding
This story is about a Packrat, who hoards many treasures. All his friends are gathering things for a neighborhood sale so they can raise money to buy a tree, but he doesn't want to part with anything. Then he decides if he sells some stuff, he can buy more stuff. When he starts to see how happy others are with his things, and that they are playing with the toys he had just sitting around taking up space, it makes him feel good and realize he doesn't use his stuff the way others will. He raises a lot of money, and when he gets home, realizes how open and clear his home is for the first time without all that stuff in the way. Even though he misses his things, he really likes the space, and decides not to buy more stuff with his money but to donate it after all. This is a great book that not only encourages reusing and donating, but helps teach a great lesson about "stuff"and how the important things in life are not things. Having known and been around hoarders, this is also a great book for children who are also exposed to that and may have tendencies to start such behaviors themselves. Highly recommended on many levels.

Teaches kids about getting rid of clutter.
My 3 1/2 year old really enjoyed this book. Pinch is a pack rat (hoarder) and keeps everything. His house is overflowing into the street. Heddy Hedgehog and Bumper Bunny come to ask for donations for the town's tag sale, but Pinch doesn't want to give anything up. It's not until he sees friends taking their things to the tag sale that he thinks he should join in. Pinch ends up selling most everything and making quite a bit of money. Heddy and Bumper want to take the money to buy a tree to make the town beautiful, but Pinch wants to keep the money to buy more things! Pinch heads home and sees how nice and clean his house is without so much stuff and decides to sale more things. He uses the money to buy the town lots of trees! This book is about reduce, reuse, and recycle. The recycle part was brief with just a small paragraph showing Heddy and Bumper taking the newspapers, cans, and bottles to be recycled. Mostly the story was about selling the things you no longer need. I do that with consignments for the kids stuff, so this helped explain why we do this. . . except that we do use the money to buy more things :/ Overall Stuff! is a good story. The illustrations are cute and engaging. I only wish the illustrations showed more things the kids could recognize. My son enjoyed searching for things in the piles, but most of the pictures were of odd things like pipes, boxes, and "stuff." Though when Pinch goes to the town tag sell the items get a little cleared, so my son was able to name a few of the toys.

From Hoarding To Making A Difference
Pinch is a packrat who coincidentally is a rat. He loves everything he owns. When his town has a big garage sale, he is faced with the dilemma of what to keep and what to get rid of. Encouraged by the fact that he will make money and can use that money to buy more 'stuff', he goes ahead with his cleaning and general decluttering. He learns about organizing, ecology, and recycling and having respect for the earth. He is also faced with a second dilemma-----whether to pitch in for a tree with his sale proceeds or keep ll the money for himself. It's all that he has learned that helps him form his decision. Well written and illustrated, this is a cute story that will probably appeal to children from kindergarden to first grade. It ties into and reinforces what children are taught in school. My granddaughter who is in first grade liked this book and went enthusiastic when she discussed her efforts at recycling and planned Earth Day activities this year. This is a topical and timely book that is easy to read and extremely cute.

Gentle Reminder To Recycle Your STUFF!
"Stuff!: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" by Steven Kroll is a great book to introduce or support the idea of reusing and recycling for the younger set. The story is a charming tale about Pinch, a pack rack, who has let the idea of buying or finding and then saving everything to the point that all his "stuff" is filling every corner of his house and spilling out into his yard. Pinch's tactful neighbors invite him to a community tag sale which at first he declines. Then slowly he decides that he should start reducing the amount of items he has and that others might want to reuse his old belongings and that recycling can indeed make a big difference in his community and in his own house. The book guides the young reader along with delightful, brightly colored illustrations by Steven Cox. The tone of the book is gentle in its message of the benefits of recycling, unlike some others that I have read that are really too pushy in their approach to this topic. Often young children will recycle when led by a teacher or parent to do so, but they really do not understand or probably even think of why they are doing it. This book shows the child how recycling can make a difference at home and in the community.
