One day, Honey Kisaragi's a trendy, class-cutting Catholic schoolgirl. The next, her father's been murdered by demonic divas from a dastardly organization called Panther Claw. When his dying message reveals that she's an android, Honey uses the transformative power of the Atmospheric Element Solidifier - the very thing Panther Claw wanted to steal - to seek revenge against the shadowy clan. Can Honey fight her way up Panther Claw's ranks to defeat its leader, the sinister Sister Jill while managing to escape the watchful eyes of Miss Histler, her school's headmistress? In the original Japanese language with English subtitles. Review: GOD Nagai! - I was 110% satisfied with my purchase of this collection of the original 1973 TV series! It was the catchy theme song that originally drew my attention to this classic, but at once I was attracted to the artwork and the animation when I saw snippets of the show on YouTube. When my order finally arrived, I was very impressed by the very simple packaging, which is replete with artwork from the show and Cutey Honey flashed all over and inside the box. You can tell that whoever designed the packaging did so with love, especially when compared to some inferior packaging design from bigger studios that have given us questionable blu ray and DVD boxsets for the likes of Avatar, Star Wars, and Indiana Jones. This series is a worthy and natural successor to Go Nagai's Devilman TV series, which was shown in Japan the previous year. Much of the artwork and animation is very similar between the two shows, and one of the characters in Cutey Honey looks literally like Akira Fudo's brother from the Devilman series. There's nothing wrong with plagiarizing your own artwork; I guess if it works then why fix it, right Go Nagai? Finally there is the content itself, which spans 25 episodes. Though not as long of a show as Devilman's 30+ episodes, Cutey Honey is still fulfilling and will take up a good chunk of your time if you binge watch the show. Though one should be aware that the season abruptly ends seemingly without a definite conclusion; the reason being that the Cutey Honey 1973 TV show is tied in with Go Nagai's manga of Cutey Honey which came out at around the same time. So if you want to find out how Cutey Honey finally deals with Panther Zora and Sister Jill as they pertain to the TV series, you must seek out the manga editions and read them. Still, the TV show is a fantastic ride and a fascinating look at the origins of much of modern day anime, which owes quite a bit to Go Nagai's early work. A great addition to your DVD collection, to be sure! Review: Legendary Warrior, Cutie Honey in the USA - We must live in a pretty cool era to have the original 1970's Cutie Honey TV series available in America. I simply though that this was something that would never ever occur. If you're a fan of anime, especially Mahou Shojo ( Magical Girl Genre), you cannot ignore Cutie Honey as a trailblazer. Cutie Honey is a very good look at the early history of the 'transforming' super hero. The entire genre owes, in a way, it's entire existence on the ideas Cutie Honey embodies, Although Cutie Honey is in fact a Shonen (Boys Genre) of Anime. The DVD set is compact, neat, and pretty simple. All in Japanese with English subs that can be turned off. The audio and Picture are excellent, obviously having been beautifully restored at some point. Beautiful , crisp picture, natural grain, psychedelic colors, funky 70's fashion. Goofy humor. Cutie Honey is great. All we need is the Cutie Honey Flash and Re: series, and we'll have a party!

Thank you Discotek!
I saw a panel at otakon 2016 on anime from this period and was very upset to get home and learn that I was unable to get this show. I'd heard about the 90s ova but the snippets of the show I saw at the panel really ignited my interest in the show. When I got this DVD and started watching it, it was exactly what I was hoping it would be! It's a little more shonen than magical girl, and the animation may seem shoddy by today's standards, but the series is loads of fun and I really can say that my collection is much better for having this in it. Kudos to Discotek for bringing more subtitled anime from this time period to us!

Cutey Honey has starred in three different anime series (not to mention live action series) over more than twenty years, of which only the first two are available in English (the later OVA series is available either separately New Cutey Honey: Collection 1 and New Cutey Honey: Collection 2 or together New Cutey Honey: Collection 1 & 2 ). Given the host of problems the production ran into it is astonishing that this first series was ever made, but the frantic attempts at rewriting it to fit the differing audience and time slot assigned made it what it became: the very first magical girl series... for boys. Honey Kisaragi is a mischievous 16-year-old student at an all girls Catholic school who discovers to her shock at the murder of her father by the criminal group Panther Claw that she is in fact an android who possesses inside her, her father's invention for turning air into matter. Desired for creating gold and jewels out of thin air, it is sought by her father's murderers, who initially don't know where it is or what she is, but Honey vows to use it instead for vengeance against them. With the help (and I use that term loosely) of the Hayami family: father, older son, younger son, and eventually nephew, lust crazed idiots all, she battles against the Panther Claw weirdo woman representative of the week. I was astonished by the beauty of the nearly 45-year-old animation, (clearly this has been restored at sometime by somebody!), it almost looks like Blu-ray! However, the weird combo of wacky humor and deadly menace took some getting used to. There is also a repetitious sameness to the episodes, most of which follow the exact same pattern. Last of all we come to Cutey Honey's gimmick: whenever she changes costume by using her father's inborn invention she is briefly, temporarily, utterly and completely nude. How does this hold up? Well, I think it is safe to say that almost half a century later, they'd still have to censor it to get it on American TV. True, it might not be as large and clear and slow moving as modern Japanese animation, but one can certainly see the reason for its fame. Note: This series represents another triumph due to the efforts of Discotek Media who are also responsible for the release of the old TOEI classics Horus, Prince of The Sun (Little Norse Prince) , The Wonderful World of Puss 'N Boots , and Animal Treasure Island . Note: This show is only subtitled in English. There is no English voice dubbing. In addition there was no effort to subtitle the signs that are used for a lot of the joke telling.

This excellent slice of anime history courtesy of Discotek Media is a great showcase for the early years of color TV anime, and Toei Animation's productions in particular were some of the very best for those early owners of color televisions. Bright, bold color designs and unique and sometimes visually abstract graphics were a trademark of Toei anime in the late 60s and early 70s. This 1973 Cutie Honey TV series created by Go Nagai may well be the Toei trademark pushed to the very extreme end...it's like a massive visual sugar rush of color. Aside from that, though, what else is there here for the modern animation fan, let alone modern anime fans? The plots in Cutie Honey, are, admittedly, Saturday Morning Cartoon calibre. There are wacky visual gags and fairly standard "Villain of the Day" plots. I wouldn't exactly call this a series aimed at younger children, either; there is plenty of bawdy humour, some "fan service" and the violence, while not graphic, is a little bloodier and harder edged than typical Sat AM animation. Some of the bizarre villains--a Go Nagai trademark--can come off scary to some young children. While I personally would not have a problem with children aged 7 and up watching this, I would recommend parents to use their own discretion in this case. I think this series is best enjoyed by teenagers who are not discriminating about "old" animation and adults who were raised on Saturday Morning Cartoons. It manages to be nostalgic while still having enough naughty and winking humour to entertain older viewers. Also notable is the "groovy" 70s style soundtrack. The video quality for this release is very good, although Discotek has very good sources to work with here.

This old series is just a good entry in the magical girl genre in anime. It does look dated by today standards but for any wants to check this out worth checking out.
