Truly professional grade
We have three dogs—two young shepherd mixes and an older pug, which play in a 4 acre yard bounded by an invisible fence. And we live in New England, so the weather can be plenty lousy and cold in the winter. We wanted something that would let the dogs in, keep the weather out, and look good. We also wanted something that was well made and would last--I am so tired of buying junk products that look great initially, but don’t hold up under normal usage. I certainly didn’t want to be taping cardboard over a rectangular hole in a leaky door insert, where a dog door used to be, in 20-degree weather. That’s why we decided to spring for an Endura Door. This door is great. It’s made just like a regular sliding door--strong construction, sturdy, and looks just like the rest of our sliding doors. It looks like it came with the house. The flap is also impressive…..it is thick, semi-opaque plastic which locks in place with strong magnets. The balance between locking vs. opening is perfect. It takes a bit of effort for the dog to open it, but once they get the hang of it, they act like it’s always been there. The flap also comes with a metal door which slides into the flap frame to essentially seal the door shut. We use this metal insert at night to prevent our dogs meeting a band of coyotes or a lost skunk come waltzing into our house. Putting in the door was a cinch, and I’m no handyman, but it was a little more difficult to train the dogs to use it. As all dog owners know, dogs have different skills, but our dogs took to it at surprisingly different rates. The smartest shepherd, Scout, was more tentative with it, seeing it as a solid object, while the other shepherd, Layla, not in the competition for world’s smartest dog, barged right through it. She also is the only one who still whacks her head into the metal when the door is closed. Mr. Pugsley was the last to master the art of opening the door, and he still needs a reminder every so often--I flick the door open with my hand--but 95% of the time he’s in and out as he wants. This issue isn’t the door’s fault. Pugsley took years to learn his name. All were proficient with opening this flap within 3-4 days. Overall, this door is one of the best buys we’ve made. It looks and works like “professional grade”, and even with three dogs barging through it constantly, it still looks brand new.

Finally after a lot of searching, a good quality insert.
I love, love, love this dog door insert and so does my small yorkie - Paxton. He goes in and out to go potty or wanders around the backyard in his "security mode" or just plays. Sure saves me having to get up each time he wants in and out and provides him more freedom. No more accidents in the house...Yay! The door itself is sturdy, well made using quality materials and well worth the price. It looks really nice and the tempered glass is clear matching my own sliding door. When I don't want him outside or it's bedtime, I just put the flap panel in which prevents going in and out. There really isn't a locking system for your sliding door, other than a small metal piece with a screw to tighten on your sliding door frame, which is useless. Maybe okay for a window but not a large sliding door. I have placed a wooden dowel in the door track which secures the actual sliding door in place. Good luck on your insert hunting!

Better than other pet door inserts out there, but room for improvement particularly at this price
This insert is significantly better than the "PetSafe" and other brands generally sold at the big box stores; that said, at this price point the Endura Flap company should, and easily could, do better. Pros: 1) From the moment I picked up this insert, I could tell it is stronger by far than the rickety aluminum ones I've had in the past -- it is heavier, thicker, and stronger all around. 2) The option to purchase a vinyl insert for a vinyl sliding glass door makes a huge difference in strength, fit, and insulation. 3) The flap is thick and the magnets are so strong, it took my dog a little while to be persuaded it's really a dog door -- nothing like the flaps on the cheaper products that let even the slightest breeze blow freezing cold air into the house. 4) The included weather stripping is a nice addition and the vinyl (or rubber?) weather seal strip is inspired -- eliminates the gaping hole between the two sliding doors that lets cold air in. 5) Time to ship is actually less than the "usually ships in 5-6 days" indicated in the "add to cart" box -- I can say this with authority because I had to have 3 different inserts shipped before getting it right, and each one was shipped within a day or two. Cons -- and the subheading here is, I had to buy THREE inserts (returning the first two) before finally getting one installed: 1) If your slider track happens to be 77" in height like mine -- and I have to think my door is a pretty standard size -- then there simply is no option for a great fit. Endura Flap offers a few size options, including one that is supposed to fit a track UP TO 77.75", and the next size up is for tracks STARTING at 77.25". Since mine fell very close to the top end of one and just shy of the bottom end of another, I contacted the company for advice before ordering (more on that below). The customer rep advised me to get the bigger one, so I did -- but that one did not work at all, even at the minimum size adjustment. The online instructions referred me to the "FAQs" for what to do, but there was no FAQ addressing this. So, back to UPS with Insert #1. Insert #2 arrived damaged (more on that below as well). Finally, Insert #3 -- the smaller size -- just BARELY works: when the adjustable portion is let ALL the way out, it just fills out the space but there is NO tension left to help secure the panel tightly in the track. For an item this pricey, one would think the company could build the doors with more than 1/2" overlap between one size and the next size up, so that it would be possible to purchase an insert for a 77" door that wasn't right at the borderline of two different sizes. 2) The website pictures of the product on Amazon, as well as the instructional videos published by the company on their website, depict two knobs or "thumbscrews" to release and secure the tension piece at the top. This is NOT accurate. Instead, there are two screws. The screws work adequately, but are not nearly as convenient as knobs for tightening/loosening would have been, and are especially more difficult if you have just one person to hold the insert with one hand and a screwdriver with the other. 3) Packaging is entirely inadequate for shipping (I have a sample size of three different inserts on which to base this conclusion). This is a heavy panel, some 6 feet long. The panels are shipped in basically in a cardboard box with no reinforcements to speak of other than about 4" at either end, where there is a multi-layered cardboard insert about 4" in width. In short, the ends of the panels are somewhat protected but there is no length-wise reinforcement whatsoever. The first insert I ordered arrived undamaged, but had to be returned. The second one arrived with one end ripped open and the 4" cardboard padding having fallen out; that door fell into two pieces when I picked it up out of the box, so had to be returned. The third insert arrived with the box crushed and split, also open at one end and the 4" padding having fallen out; fortunately the door itself was not damaged -- although the rubber weather strip had been put in the box in such a way as to crease it and likely will result in failure sooner than otherwise. For a $519 product, the packaging is far too flimsy. If the company is trying to save a penny on packaging (not to mention the sustainability issue), perhaps they could forego including a flathead screwdriver in every box - I mean, anyone who doesn't own a screwdriver probably isn't even going to attempt to insert this panel. 4) These issues were made more frustrating by the difficulty of interfacing with the company both before and after the purchase; information available online is incomplete/inconsistent, and customer service is available basically during banker's hours on the west coast -- so, if you happen to be on the east coast, you can't reach a live person until 11:30 a.m. (weekdays only). Not suggesting they need to provide 24/7 service, but having chosen not to, their website should be comprehensive and helpful. The Endura Flap website has no instructions for how to measure for the insert; that may seem obvious, but the question is whether to include the rail the door sits on or not, and I wanted to avoid precisely what happened -- having to return a very large item that didn't fit. That prompted my first call to customer service (after a two hour wait for the office to open), during which I got bad advice to order the next size up. The inserts arrive without any printed instructions, just a QR code, which would be fine except that the online instructions the code takes you to actually refer you back to printed instructions that don't exist, and also to other online instructions that equally do not exist -- including what to do if the insert is too large (the instructions say to go to the FAQs, but there is no FAQ for this). Since instructions for reducing the size were nowhere to be found on the website and I wasn't inclined to try modifying a $519 insert, I took Insert #1 back to UPS and ordered Insert #2 (although since this is not sold by Amazon, I had to wait for the refund from Insert #1 rather than having it credited as soon as dropped at UPS). When Insert #2 arrived damaged over a weekend, I of course could not reach anyone because the Endura Flap offices were closed. I got Amazon customer service involved, and they reached out directly to Endura Flap so that I did ultimately reach someone over the weekend -- although by this point I was extremely frustrated. To their credit, Endura Flap made it right in the end, as best they could: they arranged for a pick up of the damaged insert (Insert #2) so I didn't have to drive back to UPS a second time, and they credited my return of Insert #1 and shipped out a replacement (Insert #3). Bottom line: I probably would buy this insert again, at least until someone else makes an insert of comparable quality. But at this price point, Endura Flap really should up its game. There should be an insert size that is appropriate for a 77" door; the product should match the website depiction (with thumbscrews); the packaging should have a modicum of reinforcement to prevent damage in shipping; and the company needs to do a thorough scrub of the information available online to eliminate holes, inconsistencies and misinformation.
