I'm the bad guy, yo.
Season 2 of BB was described by its producers as "Walter's chickens coming home to roost". Well if that's the case, in Season 3 he starts making an omelette.Breaking Bad is unrelentingly compelling viewing. Having missed the series entirely on TV, I'm now compulsively buying the DVDs to catch up. I thought I might be able to string out the purchases until Christmas, but I suspect that I'll just buy the remaining season box sets in one go now - it's that good. The writing is witty and intelligent and shot through with moral dilemmas that refuse to let the viewer off with any easy answers. Every episode seems to end on a mini cliffhanger of some sort and every season (so far) ends on a big one. As a consequence, this innovative drama doesn't coddle you, but drags you along by the nose from episode to episode without let up.As with previous seasons, the cinematography is sumptuous. The beautifully filmed desert shots give the series a great sense of place and you can almost feel the sweat breaking out between your shoulder-blades. These contrast aptly with the equally good looking scenes shot in sterile, vaguely synthetic-looking suburban Albuquerque and all the locations are tied together by that richly Polaroid-blue sky.The acting is great and the eclectic dramatis personae hangs together beautifully. Cranston, of course, earns his awards but Anna Gunn starts to come into her own in this season as her relationship with Walter and her own values begin to be challenged. Aaron Paul's Jesse takes a bit of a back seat, but Dean Norris' burly, loudmouthed DEA cop develops a depth beyond his original role in S1 & 2 as a comic foil. THAT role is taken over by Bob Odenkirk's criminally criminal lawyer, Saul Goodman. He's a lot of fun and brings some badly needed laughs to this dark dark drama. Saul counterpoints perfectly with Giancarlo Esposito's tightly controlled meth dealing, fried-chicken-king and, in turn, Gus is a perfect antithesis to his predecessor in crime, Tuco Salamanca. So BB S3 is very much a matter of contrasts - the characters, the locations, the motivations and behaviours - and the blurring of distinction between the various extremes. BB is a real gem of a series and Season 3 carries the baton with distinction. Very highly recommended.Mike: (On the phone to Walt) Walter. You see us?Walt: Yeah. I see you.Mike: Exit your vehicle and start walking toward us.Walt: And then what? I'm going to need some kind of assurance.Mike: I assure you I can kill you from way over here if it makes you feel any better.

Voted best TV drama ever - can't argue with that
If you've never seen this, you're really missing out. Strong language, drug & alcohol abuse, and violence from start to finish but beautifully filmed, great drama (and dark humour) and the perfect soundtrack (I'm a fan of 70's hard rock but the 21st century music chosen for specific scenes has opened my ears). Watch on BluRay with 5.1 surround sound turned up and you'll feel like you're in every scene with them. Many, many scenes (especially the cliff-hangers) take your breath away. The extras on most of the discs are great, too, although the sound and pictures of these are 2nd-rate. The menus could have been better, too, but overall, the best drama I've ever seen. Better than The Bridge and The Killing, which are excellent, too.Final tip is that when watching them, on the later discs, you can start to watch the next episode (for a second or two) and then pause it. If you then turn off your BluRay and go to bed, you can pick up there the next day without having to go through all the menus. Don't know if this is a later development and if it's now a standard but I found it very useful.Anyway, just buy the whole series now and watch it over the winter (we're now watching it now for the second time and it's still as good as the first time).

Not the best season, but several edge of your seat moments make it well worthwhile.
I am a huge fan of breaking bad and believe it to be the greatest tv series of our time. It's somehow able to be touching, funny, disturbing and at times incredibly tense while still feeling believable, like something that could happen in real life. The story of breaking bad revolves around a man named Walter White, a chemistry teacher played by the incredibly talented Bryan Cranston who finds out in the first season that he has terminal lung cancer and only a few years to live. So in order to make enough money to take care of his family after he's gone, he starts cooking crystal meth along with junkie and former student, Jesse Pinkman. If this all seems a bit heavy, that's because it is. Breaking bad pulls few punches, but that's part of the show's appeal. Cancer is no laughing matter and the show doesn't try to sugar coat it either. The acting in the series is universally excellent and every episode will have you glued to the screen, even when nothing particularly intersting is happening. The first two seasons are absolutely amazing, full of moments that will have you in disbelief at what you have just witnessed. Season three continues this trend but it also loses some of the shows character. In the beginning of the season, Walter is in remission from his lung cancer, Jesse is trying to overcome a personal tragedy by taking steps to rebuilding his life, Skyler wants a divorce from her husband and two cousins are out for revenge.Firstly, the good about this season: 1. It still has some of the best writing and characters in the industry. Even Skyler, easily the most hated character in the show is brillantly realised. I'd rather a character like Skyler to a stereotypical, kind, loving housewife anyday. 2. There are several twists and turns that I promise you won't see coming. 3. Some of the new characters, including Mike(my new favourite character in the show) and the cousins are brillant additions. 4. It has moments of humour that are downright hilarious. The "I will not be threatened in my own home...bitch" line from Jesse is one that instantly springs to mind. 5. The finale to the season is incredible. It's not only the best season closer in Breaking Bad, but one of the best in tv, period. 6. The creators somehow make the mundane essential viewing. When a show is able to make chasing a fly for 45 minutes riveting, you know your watching something very special. Now to the bad: 1. Walt is in remission from his cancer which is great and all, but now a major plotline of the series is gone. As uncomfortable as it could be at times to watch, watching walter fighting his disease for long enough to make the money required to take care of his family made for some very emotional and at times, almost unbearable to watch moments. It also made Walt an easier character to like, despite all the wrong things he was doing. Now his cancer is gone, his family have more than enough to get by once he's gone and he's still cooking simply because Gus gives him some "A man provides" line? It's makes Walt a very difficult character to sympathise with. Maybe that was the creators point but the earlier seasons at least made you question what is ok and what isn't when it comes to taking care of the ones you love. 2. My final complaint. This isn't a huge one but it still bugged me a little. It almost seems at times, especially during the middle of this season that the main character of the show has switched from Walter to Hank who I care little about. Don't get me wrong, he's great as a supporting character but when he's starring in almost the same, if not more scenes as walter, it starts to grate a little. I didn't care about seeing him slowly recover every five minutes. He should do more action like in the amazing car park scene. He would definitely become one of my favourite characters then.Overall though, another excellent season and still far better than anything else on tv.

Breaking GOOD
I don't have the time (or a PVR) to catch this show when it airs on regular cable, so I tend to buy the series a season at a time. It helps me to immerse myself in the show, by watching all the episodes, "marathon style". The writing in season three was very tight, and the character development was well paced and executed. The subject matter lends itself to numerous twists and turns, and the show is maturing nicely. Walt remains Walt, despite decisions he is making that take him further into the world of meth cooking, and the deeper ties (and consequences) he forms with his boss. Season three wraps up very nicely with a cliffhanger that hinges upon Jesse's ability to take care of business, after Walt strategically positions himself to avoid dire consequences. The lawyer, the P.I., brother in law Hank and Walt's wife all share decent screen time and add to the tension and balance in Walt's life. His son is still in the dark, but his wife has moved further into the picture as she negotiates her way into Walt's criminal life, despite their married/divorced status still being undecided. Looking forward to season four.Well worth picking up and watching all three seasons of Breaking Bad.
