This isn't a starter set, it's a finisher set
Over the past several years, I've gotten more and more into cooking as it is an essential life skill, and if something is essential, then why not make it into a hobby as well. A couple years ago, I got the Dalstrong Gladiator Cleaver as my first "nice" knife and ended up using it for everything because of how good it felt to use. The balance, sharpness, and usefulness of the wide blade, made it my most used knife and have been a fan ever since. When I saw these go on sale, I couldn't help it and had to get them to replace the rest of my knives. I have no regrets. I am not going to tell anyone they have to buy these knives. If you simply don't mind cooking but want nicer knives, Dalstrong has other options that are probably great for your needs; but if you are someone who enjoys cooking and have acquired a bit of skill and consider it a hobby, these are knives you will ***happily*** use for the rest of your life. The quality is incredible and the detailing is stunning. I look forward to every time I get to use them. tl;dr: the price is only too much if you hate cooking, don't buy 300 dollar snow boots that last a lifetime if you live in Hawaii

These knives are great for every day use. Very sharp and very strong. And so beautiful.
I absolutely love my knife set. And especially the pizza cutter.

Masterpiece!
Absolutely beautiful, well balanced and razor sharp Knives in a one of a kind knife block. Very classy and looks superb in the kitchen. Cuts everything with precision! Because the are Damascus blades, special care must be taken to make sure they don't get damaged, basically wash and dry immediately after use and NO dishwasher ever! These blades should last a lifetime.

Amazing Knife Set!
The Dalstrong Shogun series is one of my favorites. Made in the damascus style of layering steel, it's super hard and strong. The edge is the sharpest available from Dalstrong since it's hand-sharpened to 10" (for comparison, most german blades are sharpened to 20degrees, japanese blades are 15degrees). And the tsunami rose engraving (which is actually a byproduct of damascus style) is absolutely beautiful! For this particular set, they chosen to include a hammered finish which really doesn't sway me one way or the other. It has everything you need. Most sets include poor quality kitchen shears or various utility knives you'll never use. This 5pc has 1 chef and 1 santoku knife for most jobs (i love the chef, my wife defaults to the santoku) , a pairing knife for precise cuts, an elegant 8" bread knife, and a 6" utility. The last is the only one i rarely use, would have rather received a steel. But all in all, this is a great collection.

These look great!
First of all, these knives are gorgeous! I expected amazing quality and I'm not disappointed. The attention to detail is really awesome and these are super sharp! I love the versatility of the different knives, I always have the right knife for the job. Totally worth the money! Update 8/12/19 - I've had these knives for almost a month and use them daily. I'm even happier about the purchase now than I was when I first got them. These knives feel great in my hand and are very easy to use. I've also gotten plenty of compliments from friends I've had over that have used them as well! you won't be disappointed!!

Nice, I like them...A. LOT.
I really like these knives...they almost fall through food! Very sharp out of the box... impressive looking, beautiful knives. My only issue: I wish the sheaths had been included, didn't notice till they arrived that there are no sheaths with the block sets. I often cook at friends homes and like to bring my own knives since theirs are generally crap! 😂 Also, wish all the handles were the same size...three largest knives have a perfect fitting handle, I'd love it if the 6" blade had the same handle. The smaller blades, 6" and the paring knife have a much smaller handle, really too small for my female hands, maybe I'll get accustomed to the small diameter... Anyway, beautiful knives, seem well made, love the sharpness and quality.

As a keen home cook who was so tired of using dull and flimsy knives, I took the plunge on this set and have to say I am really impressed so far. Blades: Out of the box all of the knives were razor sharp. I have been using them daily for a few weeks now and haven't experienced any noticeable drop off in sharpness at all yet. My previous knives would need sharpening pretty much every time I used them so this is a real plus for me. I would have to add that if you are used to using dull/cheap knives be very careful when you start out using these. Cheaper knives tend to be light as the metal is less dense and therefore becomes dull easily, you will notice that these knives are fairly heavy and as such you might need a few uses to get used to them. It's really important to use the claw cutting technique which protects your fingertips (search it if unfamiliar), take it from me as I accidentally sliced some of my thumb off when using for the first time! That is not the fault of the knives for being sharp, that is the fault of the user for not using a safe cutting technique and is a mistake you only make once. I was surprised by the blade of the knife I thought I would care about least, the bread knife. This slices through bread with ease but seems to make almost no mess at all whereas my old bread knife would leave crumbs all over the place. I think it was more ripping through the bread than slicing through like the Dalstrong does. Quality: These knives are very high quality and not only is that reflected in the knives themselves but also the packaging you receive with them which is not your typical cheap cardboard. When opening the boxes you can tell you are getting a high quality product, superior to something you'd find in Ikea. The knives themselves have a really nice finish on both the blades and the handles. As I mentioned the knives are fairly heavy but I find them really comfortable to hold, the weight may take a bit of getting used to but I wouldn't say they're overly heavy. Knife Block: Very stylish and also high quality. Feels really solid and well made especially with the metal base. I think this would look impressive in any kitchen. Value for money: There's no getting away from the fact that many people would see this pricetag as quite high for a set of 5 knives especially when two of them are small pairing knives. However I think this definitely represents good value for money, you are getting a high quality set that will last many years. Having sharp knives that keep their edge will make your life in the kitchen far easier and make cooking less of a chore and more enjoyable. Overall I am really happy with this knife set and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys cooking and wants a knife set that will last. And remember to be careful and use the claw cutting technique! I used to wonder while watching chefs using knives on tv and I can see why, perfectly balanced and of highest material in making this set, looks great. Quality can also be seen in the wooden holder. more than happy with my "chefs knife set"

I love to cook and these knives are an amazing addition to the kitchen. So very sharp that they were scary to use at first. Beautiful design and well manufactured. If the budget doesn't worry you I would say don't hesitate to buy them.

These knifes are very elegant. The handle feels very comfortable to hold. Very beautiful and of course functional. They are super sharp. I don’t think I will need any other knifes for a long time. I’m very impressed with the workmanship of the Shogun series. I bought the block which makes it easy to access a particular knife. Well done Dalstong. I also received a coupon code from Dalstrong customer service after I could not get the order processed in US dollars tho it went through so that I can get the CAD equivalent in the discount advertised on their site. Great customer service. I read and listened to all the reviews before I bought these knifes. I’m a home cook and I know the knifes have a review of being a bit on the heavy side but I don’t use them for commercial cooking and personally I like the feel. They feel substantial:) really great knifes.
