Growtrax Biodegradable Grass Seed Mat & Fertilizer - 100 Sq Ft Bermuda Rye

I bought some of this to repair an area of my Bermuda grass after digging a trench for a French drain. I wish I had enough of this on hand to do the whole thing. It doesn’t go far and of course pricier than roll out straw mats but look at the photos. Both the straw and this were laid at the same time and before I put both down I put Rye and Bermuda seed down. The material this uses sticks like glue once wet. If it weren’t for wind you could almost lay them down without spikes. Once they get wet you can’t move them and they deteriorate within a couple weeks unlike the straw mesh.

Don't waste your money on this. Did not adhere to the ground despite multiple waterings. Attempted to hold in place with landscaping pins and rocks, which did not work. The slightest of breezes caused the materials to fold over on itself, or worse, blow away. After nearly 2 weeks, zero germination.

Grotrax was very easy to use...but it is going to require you to work a little. Before you start read the directions on the back of the label (you are going to have to open the roll to get to these. Prepare your soil! soak it down overnight as directed. Lay your mats....I found they cut much easier with scissors then a blade..... Water well 2 or 3 times a day! You just can't lay the mats down and expect grass. Living in Central Texas on the rocky escarpment I could only get about an inch or so of loose soil but it seems to be enough. I spotted grass sprouting this morning lots of grass. it's been 5 days since I laid the mats. Now it is on me to keep it moist as directed. Highly recommend as a cheaper alternative to sod... if you can and are willing to wait a few weeks. I have now used this product 3 times. Two of the three have been highly successful. I have a very shaded front yard full of grass instead of mud! the third has been down only two days but I can't see why they won't grow also. I used them to cover some still bare edges and a few isolated bare spots. It has all been quick and easy. I have one more spot to fix near the driveway but have to correct a drainage problem first. Those who lack success, maybe it's a low spot that collects water drowning the seeds. I don't know but I have had no trouble. My neighbor bought some after looking at my yard and walking the dog the other day past his house I noticed he has grass growing in the places he patched with Grotrax. I did this with my 7, 4, and 2 year old, We added 3 bags of top soil to the area. No tilling just spreading the soil evenly. Our soil is hard clay so I didn't want to risk it (I live in Los Angeles, CA). I just rolled out the mat. Covered the edges with soil. Watered it. I watered 3 times a day the first 2 weeks. Twice two weeks after and once after that. I started on October 15th and that whole week was super cloudy in LA so I don't know if that delayed things but I didn't really see any germination until almost the second week. But after the there was growth everyday. I only gave it 4 stars because it's not a lush full lawn in 4 weeks as they advertised but it's pretty darn close to it and it was super easy. It's way cheaper than sod but pricier than seed. I've had bad experiences with seed. A lot of weeds grow along with it. This had 0 weeds. The few weeds that came out were what I already had. So definitely worth it. I will be buying more to do the rest. This was a test run and couldn't be happier. By the way my kids loved the project so include the little ones. They'll love seeing the growing process.

I laid down at least 12 100ft rolls over the past two weeks. One section grass has started to grow, although it is very very thin strands and not thick lush strands as it shows on the pictures. It is way more expensive that seed. It is fairly easy to lay down, but every time you get a section down on the ground the wind blows it away before you can soak it with the hose, so constantly having to weigh down with rocks before I can. soak it. As soon as it is wet it breaks down very quickly so if it folds over wet good luck getting it separate. Time will tell on the second section. It looks awful when wet and soaking and breaking down, but I think it will get better at some point. it looks like a green splattered mess on the ground! Hopefully the strands get thicker as if it stays that thin, it would not be good value for money. I completely cultivated all the earth before laying down the growtrax, so it was perfect conditions, weeded and ready to go. I am covering about a 500 sq ft area, so a lot of ground to cover. I am also seeding the other area so I can see in 4-5 weeks whether this product did better than regular grass seed and I will post again final results.

Looks like a good product maybe but was a total failure for me. Just need 1 mistake to lose the product. Before lay them on a sightly slope I threw few straws. And water it somehow soaked well normally etc. Nex day in few hours of sun it dries too fast because the gap under it caused by the straws, all the product fly over the place. (don’t use straws) water the soil before and after but I mean a lot. If not will dry fast, kill the seeds and fly all over the place. And to Remove it will be a huge mess loose soil mixed and the new alien plants will not give it to you easily. I store the rolls dry near on year seems be ok at the end I think, I see few baby rye and Bermuda in the remove process

I purchased 3500 square feet of this to cover a hillside. I used it instead of sowing with straw because I was concerned that the seed would wash off the hill during heavy rains and thought this would prevent it. I was wrong. Most of the seed washed down the hill to the bottom where it leveled off. I have thick lush grass at the bottom, even in areas that were not planted at all. But on the hillside the grass came up sparingly, like a twig here and there in many places. I thought the mat would retain the seed and hold it. But it seeming disintegrated when heavy rains fell. I have posted pictures of what the hillside and bottom look like after 2 1/2 months.

It didn't work. I followed the instructions, prepared the soil, laid it carefully and watered it 3 times a day. You need to use a light mist on your hose pipe sprayer to avoid tearing up the Growtrax. It's super thin and light and even a small breeze caused it to lift up - first problem. I continually put it back in place, hopeful it would still work. The big problem came when it rained. It was a fairly heavy rain and it destroyed all 500 sq feet of Growtrax I had put down. It simply washed the Growtrax into messy clumps all over my yard. This product did not work at all for me and turned out to be a waste of both effort and $'s .
