The Norton Anthology of Theory and Criticism

Superb Kindle Version for the 3rd Edition -- I've been waiting for this a long time, as the physical book is heavy and brings small text size. Complete, high quality links from the TOC to the specific texts (lands you just where you need to be), and footnotes/references are bi-directionally linked to allow proper lookup and return. As many know, the content of the book itself is the best: a feast for understanding and ideation.

Do your research and investigate whether to invest money and an intense amount of time and concentration, beforehand. If, after serious consideration, you think you would like to pursue this level of analysis see if a library near you has a copy for your perusal. You can always call to check if one is available. After going through the steps delineated above, and are ready to invest your time, you will know. There is no comparable compendium available. There are any number of books to seek for further research and in particular areas, that may be more focused for specific needs or interests. I purchased this copy as a gift for an advanced ‘brain-in-a body’ person. I have been reading in my copy for about 40 years. That may be a clue for you. Enjoy!

This book is life changing for those of us brought up in the ‘gee whiz/aw shucks’ school of criticism that in hindsight hid a lack of serious thought and really modest intellects. I read it five times. The fourth time underlining and the fifth time commenting, responding, discussing, and on and on. It’s a field day for hard workers.

Content excellent; types too tiny

I regularly use this anthology in a graduate survey of literary and cultural theory. I recommend it. Regarding packaging: This is a heavy book. It came swathed in plastic, in a box somewhat larger than the book itself. It shifted around a lot, with the result that the corners of the cover were slightly damaged. It would be better to surround the book with plastic pillows or other filler.

For being used, this book was in fantastic condition! (Almost like whoever had it last MIGHT not have used it much, but hey, I’m not complaining...) Shipped fast and all that. Appreciated spending much less on a textbook than I would have had to for my ENGL 301 for sure.

This book is an incredible compendium of critical theory. I will be using it for the rest of my career in English literature.

Extremely useful for advanced and graduate students of literature. I wish I had bought it and read the introduction much earlier.

This book is a great companion to any literature student. I'm starting my PhD soon, and it's been my go-to since BA. The third edition in particular has great additions, so it's definitely worth it to upgrade to it if you have the older editions like I do.

Still expensive but cheaper than what my school was asking.
