My dog is a 50 lb Aussie.  What size should I get?

My puggle is about 38 pounds and he got the small-medium size. The only reason I knew what size to get is because I bought the medium sized one at the petstore (they didn't have the half-sizes like I needed). On the package it shows you the size you need depending on your dog's girth. So you just measure your dog around the rib cage right behind his front legs. I have bought a couple of these for my german shepherds and have found them great as they no longer pull and tug, but I have found that because they do still try and pull that the hair is wearing away from near the top of their legs. I bought seatbelt covers and wrapped around the bottom girth strap.  This fix held for several years. My needle skills leave much to be desired, but as the stitches were away from my dog’s ‘legpits’, the seam didn’t rub.

the sizes available and the sizing chart have different descriptions. I don't know whether to order sm/petite or small

My 8 month old 9.5 lb pup was in between twp sizes (petite/small and small) - I ordered the larger (small) size as jackets of this size fit and i thinks she'll still grow a bit.  This was the wrong choice and the harness drooped too low on her chest, even on the smallest adjustment, tangling her in the leash too often.  I returned from our 1st walk and just set up the return and re-ordered the petite/small and hopeful that this work. The quality and function seem excellent!
