Defense is the hardest part of playing bridge, but that doesn't mean that it's impossible to learn. In this book the authors explain how to make a plan as a defender: how to work out from the auction and play what declarer probably has, and which of the strategies available to defenders is likely to be successful. Opening leads, signaling and discarding are all covered in this basic guide to a vitally important topic. Review: Best Defense Book I have read - I own and have studied the classic Defense book by Eddie Kantor as well as Marty Bergen's Defense book. While I am generally impressed by Marty's unparalleled bidding system and have doubled my scores in playing ACBL sanctioned MP games. Marty's Defense book is very good but not comprehensive like Ms. Seagrams. And at times, Marty's cookie cutter does not always work in 1S - P - 2S - P - 4S for example. This book address nearly all situations. I wish that I can convince my partner to read this book. Very thorough. There is only one chapter where she recommended holding the AKxxx and let the Declarer take the first trick, so that when the partner returns that suit, you can set the contract. IMHO, you better MAKE SURE that your partner has something to come back to you, otherwise you will surely get the bottom board in a match point competition. Yes, you always must examine the dummy carefully and estimate your partner's strength. I also hate to lead top of nothing with J10xx. Underleading J in a NT can be troublesome. This book, like all her Bridge books offer excellent examples to practice all, contain wonderful defense tactics. I have been playing ACBL sanctioned games for 7 or 8 years with sufficient points for lifemaster lacking gold points (no regular partner). With good defense, you have a good chance to beat the long time lifemasters with very good odds. Good defense works even if your partner is not great (but still above average) in defense. I find it difficult to beat the pros in Declarer play on a consistent basis. Review: Great primer for good defense - I love Barbara Seagram's "25" series of books. This one walks you through progressively advanced defensive techniques with clear concepts and good examples to make the point. The quiz after each chapter reinforces the concepts. If you can grasp most of what she offers in these 25 chapters, you will be in the top echelon of defenders at your local club. My bridge friends and I consider "25 Conventions You Should Know," "25 Ways to Win More Tricks as Declarer," and "25 Ways to be a Better Defender" to be our bridge "Bibles."

I bought 20 Copies For My Bridge Club - They Love It!
This is a great book, the 1st of 4 books on bridge published under the "25 Ways To..." title. Seagarm and Bird and great teachers. The take you step by step, using great examples and self - tests. If you want to improve your game, I highly recommend this entire series of books. And... I bought 20 copies for my bridge group. Everyone there is raving about it. Lastly, I got a great price from this supplier, and everything was delivered on time in first class condition.

Great bridge book
I've been boning up on my defense this year and Barbara has a really simple way to explain difficult concepts. I like her approach, her examples and the tips to remember at the end of the chapter. In fact, I copied her method of repeating the important points in my book, "Raising Able: how chores cultivate capable confident young people." [...]>Well done,</a> Barbara. I own another of your books too - "25 Conventions You Should Know" and I reccomend the books, too, to people making the leap from social bridge to duplicate bridge.

There are not many books on defence and this one is particularly good for intermediate players
There are a number of books in the '25' bridge series covering both bidding and play. They are all extremely well written and cover each topic in detail before finishing with a quiz to check understanding. There are not many books on defence and this one is particularly good for intermediate players. Beginners may struggle a little while the more expert player may find the book too 'simple'. By looking at the quizzes first it is possible to gauge how much reading you need to do or whether you are already at the level of a good defender.
