What shavings ? Is the semi rough surface for sharpening knives?

The semi rough surface, should be the flint. You would strike that with the back edge of your knife or another metal edge, which will give you spark. You shave the magnesium block and try to get the sparks towards the shavings. Real nice item for your bag.

I can't recall, as I threw mine away shortly after receiving it. The magnesium bar is VERY low grade, recommend against purchasing this one.

What is included in the package

The magnesium bar with a flint bar embedded in the edge, you would still need a steel (or knife blade) to strike the spark.
