Would this set off metal detector?

I have to walk through metal detectors when leaving my job. It did not set it off. The detectors can be adjusted for sensitivity, so it could be different for you. I would think that in most cases, a metal detector would not go off unless it is set to the highest sensitivity.

Does this work with a tie, and support my collar If I want to undo the top button?

I would not recommend this with a tie, but it's perfect to support your collar - even with two buttons undone.

Any comments on how to stop it from sliding around so that it pokes out of the front on one side?

Hi Yes, if the product slides around, do the following: 1: Ensure that both lower legs are equally bend, 2: Place the Collar Shaper upside down on a table and ensure the U shape is completely touching the table, and 3: Ensure that you have a perfect U shape and not one tip ahead of the other. If these steps do not solve the problem please send us an email and we can exchange the product for a smaller size. Regards Collar Shaper

What part of the collar am I measuring? The folding part, or the base part that buttons?

You are suppose to measure the width of your neck. Whatever you shirt collar size is the one you choose. So if you are a large your shirt size is 16-16.5
