These are so cool for machine needles which are threaded left to right or right to left. I think they could be useful for machine needles which thread from front to back as well, but you might have to remove the presser foot, first. VERY easy to use, even though they're only about an inch long. They're SO small that after trying one, the package containing the rest of them has hidden somewhere in my sewing room. When I find them, I'll be tying those things up on loops of bright red ribbon. :)

hard to use if your machine threads from the front because you have to go from the back at an angle

I looked at a few convincing YouTube videos. The demos were short but persuasive. ->First, I tried using this device with my sewing machine needle (14/90) mounted in the needle clamp of my sewing machine. I figured out I will need to poke the short rod into the backside of my sewing machine needle. (The flat end of my needle faces to the rear). I was able to reproduce the results shown in many YouTube videos (using a mounted, stabilized needle). HOWEVER, it is tricky to feed the short rod into the backside of the mounted needle on my sewing machine. I think these devices are great for side loading sewing machine needles. Second, I tried using this device with my sewing machine needle (14/90) not mounted in my sewing machine. I was able to poke the short metal rod into the hole of the needle and stabilize the needle and device between 2 fingers in my left hand. Then I tried to grab the thread (spooled) in my right hand to wrap it around the metal bud at the end of the short rod. However, it is very tricky to stabilize the short rod poked through the needle between 2 fingers. Maybe this takes more dexterity and practice with loose needles? ->My next try? Maybe devise a simple clamping setup? (clothes pin?) for a loose needle?
