Great complete train set, with various wagons, interesting track, remotely controlled with fun for young AND old(er)!
Great set with a large variety of components. Easily packed per item so easy to set up. Always been a big fan of Lego when I was young and boy Lego has evolved along with the technology of today! The train comes with a remote controller allowing you to drive multiple trains and is a great gig for every child. The train track has nice diversity with various nice additions such as a container carrier, truck and lifter. Although I thought it was a bit expensive at first, it is worth the money, and of course lego quality is phenomenal. The box said from 6 years on and I got this for my 4 year old girl. She couldn't do the assembly except for the larger items, but loves playing with it. Highly recommend this set. It can be used as a starter kit, but has a lot of additions, so you could give the extras as bonus to get the feel of expansion.

Fantastic!
Santa brought it to our almost 8 year old son for Christmas. He spent all day building the pieces on his own with no help and has been playing with the train since. Definitely worth it, but we got a great deal, wouldn't have been able to get it otherwise. It does use 9 aaa batteries...and I despise the constant need for batteries in toys. Luckily santa brought enough rechargeable batteries in the stocking that we don't have to worry about it for a while, The price greatly inflated by Christmas so I'm glad we checked on Black Friday where it was on sale for $124.99 down from around $159.99. We also used amazon points we had accrued and got the train for $85.00! It has more track than the red commuter train, but it would still be nice to have more track..,.which actually is harder to find and quite expensive, with not so great reviews. Great train, our son is in heaven!

Best gift of Christmas
Our 5 year old son is simply in love with this Lego train. He was able to put everything together will very little assistance... mostly some help with the few stickers that need to be applied. We were pleased with the full compliment of rail cars along with the crane and truck. The IR remote control work easily from across the room and also allows for future expansion. It is an excellent set that will not disappoint! Hours of fun await.

Great train
This is an exceptional kit!! Well worth the price. Plenty of track for a simple design, but very expandable. The Locomotive was designed to easily incorporate the Lego Light kits for front and back lighting. The only issues seem to be with the Minifigs. The crane operator is constantly complaining about the lack of ladder to the crane operators seat, and the truck driver is union so he only hauls certain loads, and refuses to deal with the non union Minifigs. The Engineer might have a substance abuse issue, as he is regulatory seen with his red coffee mug, and after the last derailment that ended in the locomotive having to be completely re-assembled, he was quoted as saying "Atleast I didn't spill my drink"

First lego train set
I would really only give this 3.5 star, but I rounded up to 4. The train is nice and very detailed. But I have a few complaints. One, the two small cars that came with it could have been a little better. One of the car, blue and black, is put together in a way that it easily falls apart. A few more interlocking pieces to make it more secure would have been nice. Battery box is screwed on with tiny screws. Lego isn't exactly a toy for infants because of the small pieces so for the life of me I don't know why it has to have a childproof battery box that is cumbersome to replace batteries. It should be snap on and off easily. I guess you can always get the rechargeable battery but that's going to add to the cost. The remote control was not high quality. You can touch it slightly and it would register, the "click" doesn't exactly mark the point where you change from one speed to the next. When you put the train on first speed, it doesn't move, you have to click it 2 or 3 times. Overall I like the train, just wished it was a little better.

Great train set from LEGO!
We got this for my 8-year-old son for Christmas, and he just loves it. He originally wanted the "advanced" train, but when we told him that didn't come with a motor or tracks, he switched to this one, and I'm glad he did. He and his uncle had fun putting it together, and it really does stay on the tracks and is fun to play with. The track is small, though, so we're getting him some more for his birthday. Nice set for the price!

Awesome Lego for any Trainiac
A great set for any trainiac..."Mr Frieght" as my son named him, comes with a flat bed car carrier with 2 cars, container flat bed, fuel/container, loading bridge and track. It also comes with the motor and wireless remote control (which can control 2 trains at once). This set was much better value in my opinion than the red Lego City Passenger Train...it has more stuff. The train itself is highly detailed and looks good, but because of the level of detail you will find that parts will fall off with rougher handling.

Missing Parts
I purchased this as a Christmas present for my 11 year old son and of course he was so excited to put it together on Christmas. Lo and behold, bag 1, which is the building supplies for the main engine, was missing the wheel components!! I had one unhappy little man to say the least!! I ordered the missing parts online thru Lego.com on Christmas morning & they just shipped yesterday from Denmark. Certainly will not be in a hurry to purchase ANYTHING Lego any time soon!!

If you love model trains (e.g. you have/had H0/N/etc-gauge) you may be a bit skeptical about Lego trains: they cost quite a bit, are "chunky" (after all made of bricks ;) and not really "true to life". Why not get a model (though a model is not a toy)? Let me tell you this is more - not only it allows you to "blend" your passion for Lego and model trains - but it is far more appropriate for a child than a model - you build it together, you/child can customise it with bricks from other sets, can be played it rather than just "admired". The controller is somewhat of a revelation - it gives you the DCC flexibility of running multiple trains on the same track(s) with far less complexity. Even if you start with 1 train now, it is good to know the flexibility is there. Compared to the other Lego trains (e.g. passenger) you get more variety in wagons and other parts (crane, truck, etc.) which I think makes it better value. You can also customise it with more wagons (bought elsewhere, e.g. the 'bay). I'd say get more tracks as you can never have enough track; what you get is not bad and allows reasonable layout but 1-2 sets of extra track will help. And watch the price! Sometimes it is up to 30% cheaper so it pays to buy it when cheap and store it (make sure you hide it well) until the event (birthday, Christmas, etc.) as the saving is significant. Enjoy!
