Mann Lake DC665 10-Pack Apistan Strips

I have 2 hives, one was infested with varroa mites and wouldn't have survived the winter. I use a screened bottom board with a plastic tray to monitor what falls out of the hive. Within 2 days there were about 10 dead mites per square inch. I have had the strips in the hive for 5 weeks now and only 2 or 3 dead mites are found every few days. The bees are happier and more active and have been collecting from late shrubs this sunny October on the north Oregon coast. I removed honey supers before using the strips as directed. These bees are quite hygienic and have adapted to a cooler damper climate. They appear to be wild Italian hybrids that swarmed into an empty hive in June 2012. This is the first year I have used the Apistan strips or any mite defense, ever.

I was seeing DWV on some of my bees, and within a week spotted a mite. I installed four strips (two hive bodies) on Saturday and by Wednesday was already seeing a drop in the DWV bees. I had some people tell me that Apistan is not effective and that mites are resistant to it, but apparently, no one told MY mites, because they are dropping dead! Haven't seen a mite since installing and, more importantly, my girls are acting like themselves again. I don't even have to open the hive to see the difference - just their behaviour at the landing board is noticeably improved.

Read the specs....yuck! if you eat your won honey. Too many chances the poison will enter your own system. I am going to follow natural protocol using a sliding bottom tray and powdered sugar on sticky mats. Dusting the hive lightly with powdered sugar also helps the bees groom themselves and remove mites.
