XHDATA D219 Portable AM FM Radio, Battery Operated Transistor Radio

A seriously good radio in a small package. This is equal to or outperforms my other small radios in both reception and sound quality. It's DSP but not unpleasant to tune. Locks onto stations fairly easily and doesn't pop off frequency when you move your hand away. I listen to AM at night and this performs about as well as another larger old GE analog from the 80s but this one does better separating two nearby stations compared to the old superhet. Excellent value. I don't think you'll find a better portable radio for less than $20.

i pretty much only use this to listen to NPR and occasionally some jazz station near me as background noise on my desk, the speaker is perfectly good for this. When i started looking at small radios i scoffed at these unknown names like XHDATA. But you know what, these are the main guys these days if you want a quality cheap radio. I just don't understand how this radio is so cheap, the quality control with mine is outstanding for the cost. I don't need a second one but i feel like i have to buy a second one for how good it is lol. I'm gonna resist though... maybe... Heres a pic with soda can for scale.

The people that don't understand radios are going to complain about the tuning. This is not the radio for you if you're used to tapping a button and getting instant results. It's not going to happen here. This is an excellent all-rounder. FM is clear on everything I tuned to from end to end on the band with the antenna fully extended. Most AM stations come in clear for the most part. Some have static, but that's the nature of AM. Shortwave works and it's a little harder picking up the weaker transmissions. The ones within 8-900 miles away come in pretty clear when there is a transmission. If you know Morse Code, there seems to be PLENTY of that going on. For the areas in any band that are crowded together, I found I have to use a three step tuning. The radio is very sensitive so it picks up the energy from your body. It will seem as though the tuning moved and it didn't. Turn up the volume a little and tune to your body's energy. Move and if it's not where you tuned it, tune it again to your soul. Move and if the radio calls you back the third time should be the charm and you've tumed it to the radio. Now you know why your grandparents were always admonishing you about touching their radios. Now go and enjoy what you like listening to while doing what you like to do.

While I just received this little gem I can say that I'm enjoying it greatly. The sensitivity and sound quality are very good, and compare favorably with my old Grundig TR II. This review is written with less product experience than I prefer but my D-219 had a quirk that I thought I should let people know about so that, hopefully, someone won't make the same mistake that I almost did. When I was ready to try the radio out I chose two Ni-Cad batteries to see how much operation they'd provide. But when I turned on the radio nothing happened! After trying Ni-MH and Alkaline batteries with the same result I decided that I had to return it. I thought I'd get one more data point so I connected my universal AC adapter at 4.5v. When I turned the radio on it worked, so the problem was with the battery circuitry. But when I disconnected the adapter and turned it on again it powered up! The contact that isolates the batteries from the 5v supplied by an adapter must have been stuck open and was able to close after I disconnected the AC adapter and it has been fine ever since. High quality and inexpensive!! What a blast to go back to the good Ole days of tuning!

BUY the earlier version of the D219 in black. This one abruptly turned to static on the after limited use today. After some troubleshooting, I was able to determine that the DSP tuner malfunctions after a couple minutes. You can turn the radio off, turn it on again, listen to whatever you wanted, and it reoccurs. The only use now is to cannibalize it for parts, like the antenna. I would not say that about the older model from 2023. I did like the color, but, the older had a better build quality.

Cute radio. Okay build quality. Good reception on AM and FM. Very tiny sound. Not good even for speech/news, very bad for music. There are radios with much better sound/speaker in the same size/price range. Sound over headphones is better. No stereo on FM but at least the mono sound comes out though both earpieces. Power LED. Pretty useless and annoying at night. Some controls are off-white (band selection and tuning wheel) others (volume) are black. Strange. Exterior color is painted on. Any scratch would show the off-white plastic body (fully on display inside the battery compartment). Biggest issue (and the main reason for returning it): SW reception. There is strong interference/bleed-through from AM stations, to such a degree to make SW useless on this radio. Other radios in this size and price range (including other XHDATA radios) do not have this issue, or at least not as pronounced.

This is the coolest personal radio. Excellent reception from a long antenna. Surprised how well it sounds for such a tiny speaker. Easy to use, looks and works great!
