worth the wait
Having been informed that finches are fussy and like "fresh" seed, I was a little worried about the seed that had been in the feeder for over a year! had I wasted my money on 12kg too much. However now they have found it (when the sunflower seed feeder ran out), the feeder has a constant queue of finches of all sorts. It now lasts just over a week a fill. The bag is heavy and for me has been ok, not split, but it would be a problem if it did. there have been twigs, so sometimes the feeder blocks, but only a couple of times in the bag. I tried to sieve it! not worth it!

Happy Birds!
Wanted to try a small pack of this seed in a new bird feeder. The small birds, especially siskins, really seem to like it, so it's a winner!

quality product - good price
If you are lucky niger seeds in a tiny holed feeder will attract goldfinches in large number. They are a joy to watch, brightly colour argumentative acrobatic little birds that squabble constantly. They have a distinctive light giggling song and usually hang about in big groups. In the late summer the dangle upside down on thistles to eat the seeds, I have no idea what they eat the rest of the year but the do love the niger seeds. Despite the tinyness of the hole in the feeder, they do make a terrible mess so try to get a feeder with a try underneath to catch the dropped seeds. Having said that the seeds don't seem to harm the plants underneath and don't germinate in the garden (phew). It is a great price for this quantity of seeds - get some air-tight storage containers to decant the seeds into when you have opened the bag (old fat ball containers work well for this but you will need a few)

Goldfinches love them but problems with seeds sprouting in my lawn
I've been using these for a few months now and the goldfinches in my garden absolutely love them. We had no problems during the long dry summer but now discarded seeds are germinating in my lawn creating a thick carpet of seedlings. I did some research which suggested that niger seeds are heat treated before export to prevent this happening but this seems to only apply to the US not the UK. I have just phoned the company that imports this brand into the UK and they confirmed that these seeds are NOT heat-treated so I will now look for specific brands that are to prevent the problem of germination in my lawn.

Hmm..12.75kg is questionable..plse read..
Good value for money… more so because I actually transferred them into two supposedly 10kg buckets from another seller, and after filling the buckets to their full capacity, I had some of this packet still left… had also, already, filled eight feeders before trying to place the seed into buckets. So, figure what you can from this, cos somethings not adding up right, somewhere along the line! Birds love the seed tho. I have more than 50 visiting, daily..more when littlens are about. Pretty birds..
