The trash can itself works wonderfully. It looks and feels durable, has a very sturdy pedal, and rests beautifully against the wall. Regular kitchen trash bags (the flex kind) grip very well and don’t need any kind of band to hold the bag. (I’d imagine any 13-gallon bag would be fine because of the shape of the mouth of the can.) this makes it easy to take the trash out. The lock on the front is very helpful for keeping a small 10-pound dog out, and that feature was the reason we bought it. I was hoping my dog would lose interest because of the lid AND the lock. No such luck—I’m not sure how he got the can all the way across the kitchen while I was at work, but the lock held tight, and even after being (possibly) kicked around the kitchen, the can looks great. The lock will definitely not be released by a dog or a child; it takes a bit or force and dexterity of force to unlatch it. It’s not as difficult as it sounds, though. I’d definitely recommend this can if you’re looking for a sturdy and attractive trash can that gets the job done. Just don’t forget to lock it before you leave if you have a crazy pup! This is a replacement for a 20+ year old trash can of a different brand, so we just wanted something basic—with a little upgrade. This fits the bill.

I never thought I'd get excited over a trash can, but I love this can. For the past several years, I have been using a very expensive electric / battery powered touchless stainless steel tall kitchen can. It worked great for the first few years, and then gradually over time, the lid had more trouble rising and stayed up for only a couple of seconds, so I decided I was going to go low tech this time and buy a can that had a foot pedal. If you are reading this review, you are doing exactly what I did. I wanted a decent can at a reasonable price that got good reviews from people not paid or incentivized by the manufacturer to review them. I paid full price for this can, which I bought from Amazon, and my opinion is totally unbiased. I wish I had bought this can earlier. It's light weight, but sturdy. The only negative I found was what others experienced: you have to really press down to get the lid to lock on to the can, but it's doable with little fuss as long as you understand that. It's the only assembly required. The can came in a really large box with a lot of packing material, which was wasteful. It also came with the lid propped on the top of the can -- just not attached. It seems like it would be easy for the manufacturer to just attach the lid at the factory if it is going to be shipped with the lid on top of it instead of having a lot of reviewers complain about problems they encountered attaching the lid. Easy fix and the only negative. The can comes with a supply of bags made to fit and you can order more from the manufacturer, but the great news is that any standard 13 gallon tall kitchen garbage bag will work just fine. For some reason, I thought there was a ring or rim to secure and cover the bags, but there is not. The fit is tight enough and secure enough that you just turn the top of the bag over the rim of the can and it easily holds in place, and you really can't see the bag because most of it is covered by the lip of the lid. To open the can, press the foot pedal. The lid will stay open several seconds and then slowly close by itself. If you want the lid to stay open, pull it open by hand instead of using the foot pedal, and then close it manually when you are ready. Easy. This can will not sit flush with the wall because there is a small bumper in the back that allows for the space needed for the lid to open fully, so be aware of that when making location decisions based on size. You'll need to allow a couple of inches of clearance from the wall. I have a large puppy who is interested in everything, including the trash. My favorite thing about this can is that you can lock the lid shut. Push the silver locking mechanism toward the back of the can to lock and pull it toward you to unlock. The lock will hold even if you tip the can over. Now, I don't have to worry about my dog getting into the trash anymore. The matte finish on the can means no fingerprints (or nose prints), so you won't be constantly wiping it down. I wish I had bought this can years ago.

I have other products by them that have always delivered but I didn't know what to expect from the trash can since I haven't had much luck with other brands in the past. The can is sturdy with a thicker plastic and very durable. I love the quiet soft close lid and the wider foot pedal. The lid has a lock but I don't use it since I don't have little ones anymore or pets. However, if you do, this would be very helpful. The trashcan has a "guard" on the back which allows the can to sit an inch or two from the wall--I love this! My favorite feature of all is the NON-SLIP bags. I've always had this issue with other can I've used in the past, and I absolutely hate it. But This was my first simplehuman trash can and I'm VERY impressed. I have other products by them that have always delivered but I didn't know what to expect from the trash can since I haven't had much luck with other brands in the past. The can is sturdy with a thicker plastic and very durable. figured it out, and now I don't have to worry about this anymore. I purchased their liners but have not used them yet, I have a large box of Kirkland 13 gallon bags from Costco which fits perfectly and I've had no issues with the bags slipping. Although the bags hug the rim, they're still easy to remove. Overall, I love this trash can and would purchase another from simplehuman in the future if needed.

Even though my wife and I have been married for 35 years, we still disagree about things around the house. One of those disagreements had to do with the waste basket we used in the kitchen. Me, being the slob around the house, my main pre-requisite for a trash is that it is available, and convenient. This means it cannot be in a cabinet and it cannot have a lid that I have to open with my hands every time. Sometimes using my hands to open a lid isn't practical, or possible. My wife on the other hand, feels that a lid on the trash can is very important. Understandably so because it covers the unsightly trash and it reduces the odors that will sometimes emanate from the trash in the can. However, if I'm carrying something that requires two hands, or my hands have food residue on them, the cover on a trash can drives me nuts. So, the only reasonable option for us was to find a trash can with the foot actuated lid. That sounds much easier than it really was. We searched for months but could not find one that was practical. Most were flimsy and I knew would not hold up very long. Also, all of the ones we looked at were too small and so would require too many bag changes. If we did find one that was big enough and sturdy, it would be way too expensive. Finally one day my wife told me she had ordered a foot operated trash can from Amazon. When it came I was AMAZED. This trash can is perfect in EVERY way. Even though the unit is made from some kind of plastic material, it is sturdy. The frame around the bottom is a solid steel as is the pedal that you step on to open the lid. In addition to sturdy, this trash can is big. it is a perfect size for a kitchen and our "Tall Kitchen" trash bags just fit. The band of the bag folds over the top edges and stays in place until it is time to remove the full bag and replace it. The final feature which earns this trash can the title of "World's Perfect Kitchen Trash Can" is that for those times when you have several things to put in the can, or you are peeling vegetables into the can and you want the lid to stay open, it will. If you open the lid with your hand, instead of your foot, the lid will stay open. That feature is pure genius. We have had this trash can for a year now and I'm still as impressed with it as I was at the beginning. Nothing has malfunctioned or shown any signs of wear yet. Pros: 1. Well built, very sturdy construction 2. Good size, fits a standard tall kitchen trash bag 3. Great design and veratility: - Lid opens smoothly with foot pedal - Lid closes smoothly using air dampening technology -Lid will stay open if opened all the way by hand 4. Proves once again that my wife is a genius Cons: NONE This trash can truly is a marvel and I congratulate this company on a fine product.

Honestly, I really do like this trash can. Functionally it’s great and it looks fantastic, but lately the right hinge of the lid keeps popping out. Not sure how to get it to stop. No one in the household seems to be doing anything strange with it, so I think the plastic is worn down? But we’ve only owned it for a few months. Still would recommend it this, but I’d really like a way to fix that too.

I never thought i’d say this but I’m very pleased and impressed with this trashcan purchase. I specifically needed a “dog proof” garbage bc our little 18lbs Bichon just can’t help himself when he is alone and tears at the can liner bag edges until he knocks it over. One too many messes and eventually we stopped having a garbage can in the actual house (it was moved to the garage) and have been using plastic grocery bags placed so graciously on the counter and taken to the outside bin at night. I had bought myself an automatic one for my bathroom- another trash can he is obsessed with bc my daughter uses pads and I think you get the picture. Dogs love all body fluids 🤦🏻‍♀️ He hasn’t really figured it out yet, but we also basically stopped leaving pads in there at all, and the automated part is kinda cool so that’s initially what I wanted to get for the kitchen. I was dreading the battery powered lid getting knocked over and tossed around. I was imagining the possible scenarios and eventually leaned away from that bc common sense says getting something more fragile isn’t a good idea knowing it will take abuse by an animal. After literal hours looking around.. I really liked the way this one sounded.. and I realized that a step pedal would probably suit my needs better.. plus it probably won’t break ever.. so in the end I decided this was probably a safer bet. It got here and I was pretty impressed. My old 13 gallon was dwarfed next to this. I didn’t even notice the hook in the back, which is perfect bc there is this hook on etsy that would fit perfect and basically screws the garbage to a wall so the dog can’t move it, but I decided to wait on that unless it’s needed. update: so we’ve had this maybe two weeks and a few days ago my mom was cooking and using the garbage.. with Bruno watching 🤣.. so after seeing what is actually was.. that night he finally made his move. He knocked it over and I hadn’t yet decided to keep it locked bc I wasn’t sure if I needed to. Because he is so intelligent sometimes, I have this tendency of giving him too much credit and it’s easy to forget he’s still just a dog. So I picked up the mess and told everyone it’s gotta stay locked all the time period no excuses..or you’re cleaning it up. Want to guess what woke me up this morning dramatically crying in front of the garbage can they knocked over but couldn’t get into? He knocked it over a few more times today, so by now he should get the hint that it’s no longer accessible to him, but we are still going to keep it locked bc he’s more than likely going to still try sometimes. I can’t say enough good things about this trashcan! and the best part is it does what it says !! update again: Lmao so again, this morning I woke up to an almost rhythmic banging noise. I was so confused when I first woke up that I didn’t actually get up,. I just listened to the sounds. then I realized it was my dog and the garbage again! I went downstairs and he has it wedged between couches (he dragged it everywhere😭) and I can only guess what the banging was. Him jumping? His hind legs? No idea but it was HILARIOUS 🤣 He had tore at the bag and there were easily over 100 little pieces of bag everywhere but the can was still closed. He could not get it open !! I wish I took a video or even a pic, but I was half asleep. Everyone reading this probably has a dog, so I don’t have to tell you how smart your dog is. Or maybe is not.. but you know how smart dogs can be. He is not physically capable of producing motions or movements that would cause this to open in any way. If dogs had opposable thumbs, it would 100% be open. I am just so over the moon happy but he cannot get to it and the trash is actually safe, and nothing he does will get this change that. Fantastic product like I am in awe of how such a simple design works so efficiently.

This is the second time I have purchased this trashcan. It was so good for the first 5 years we decided to get a new one. It held up great and looks good. Easy to assemble because you basically just take it out of the box and throw a bag in it. Its not the Fanciest but its a work horse that will last for your family.

I'll keep this short and sweet. Our 75lb Labradoodle is currently on a very strict diet for 6 weeks to determine if he has a food allergy. Needless to say he hates it, and despite his very good training and usually impeccable behavior, he has begun knocking over the garbage can to rummage for scraps when we're not home (see pic). NAUGHTY DOG!!! Obviously we can't have this going on every day so I ordered this can right away in hopes that it would put Mr. Dog in his place. I have one word for how well it works: Checkmate! This is a very big, very smart dog and he is no match for this garbage can! HOORAY! It is well built, heavy duty, well designed and the lock keeps the lid securely in place even if he knocks it over. This is our first time with a step to open can. I have always been skeptical because it seems like the step function always breaks. So far so good with this one! I think the way it's designed it will last for a very long time. The lid opens fast but shuts slow, which isn't a problem for us. You can also still open and shut it the old fashioned way with your hand which I appreciate. It looks about as elegant as a garbage can CAN look without costing a fortune. I love the wall separator feature (I don't know the technical name for it) but it's really handy in keeping it the perfect distance from our cabinetry so it has no trouble opening and closing and doesn't rub up against the wood. Another thing I LOVE is that it came with a package of sample trash bags to use! So far I really like those as well and will probably be putting them on my Amazon Subscribe and Save list! The can comes with a 5 year warranty which is AWESOME! Most importantly, this can holds a LOT of trash!! Most of the step cans I've seen in stores are little circles or squares that are way too small for our needs. I LOVE the size of this can! See side by side comparison pics to our old Sterilite can. The lock works wonders and not only keeps the dog out but my autistic 5 year old as well! I only have 2 minor complaints. The first is that it took a LOT of effort to get the lid to snap into place when I put it together for the first time, but now that it's on it is extremely secure. The second is that it's nearly impossible to lock and unlock the lid with one hand. That's a big bummer, but certainly not a deal breaker. If I could take off half a star for that I would. I never thought I would be a huge fan of a garbage can, but I can officially say that I am now! Thanks for doing it right, simplehuman! Hopefully this helps someone else with a similar problem. Excelente bote, tiene sistema de cerrado despacito cuando oprimes el pedal, pero si lo abres de la tapa, se azota al cerrar. Le caben las bolsas de 50 litros sin problema.
