Great Purchase - Even for first time users
Just to start this off I wanted to say that this is my first radar detector so I do not have any knowledge in comparison to other brands/models. With that being said, I have had a great experience in the 18 months Iโve owned this detector. It works very well, picking up both k & ka band for up to miles away on the freeways and a very generous distance during city driving. The laser feature also works very well and is a tone that quickly gets your attention. This device is also very user friendly/simple to use. I learned all of the features within the first week and let me tell you - the mute memory feature is a life saver with the constant K band interference you are bound to run into. I always have left my detector on Highway mode (I understand this is the most sensitive mode) and I can confidently say that this detector has saved me from multiple tickets (especially the sneaky speed vans/motorcycle cops in town). Also the build quality of this thing is no joke. Not a single button has began to wear out and everything feels just as solid as it did day 1. This is with it having been in my front windshield (exposed to both OR & AZ seasons) every day of ownership. It has fit well in multiple of my vehicles and the only draws I could possibly come up with is that occasionally I have to remount the suction cup due to changes in temperature overnight as well as some passengers having called it annoying (Iโm sure theyโd say the same about any radar detector). With that being said, I forget itโs there most of the time and itโs simply become a part of my alertness while driving. Great product with no issues thus far. I recommend this to all friends and family.

I like it a lot!!! See mounting photos below: has worked out great....
I have only had this unit a short amount of time. Coming from 3 Valentine One detectors, I view this as a huge improvement and truly enjoy the features that make traveling more relaxing. The "MARK" idea is brilliant and coupled w/the GPS, I can now ignore those warnings. HOWEVER, I have turned-on the "VOICE" and have found that it is invaluable when used with the "MARK" feature: it warns you verbally that you set a MARK for this particular area and that radar may indeed be present. Genius!!!!! Set on "CITY" mode, I get much fewer alerts around town, esp. compared to the old Valentine ONE. Also, it is relatively small, as you can see from the attached pics. The small suction cup mount is holding up very well!!! Mounting the unit at the top of my windshield also provides me with increased warning distance. There are other features that I have not had the time to discover, but will do so.... Another thing, the printed manual is a real bonus, to say the least. It's in the Porsche Panamera S so I can refer to it at any time. Kudos to Uniden for doing this vs. only having the option to download it from the internet. Mounting it was not complicated: the suction cups went almost underneath the liner, stayed fast and allowed the clip to work normally. Next, because it did not position itself horizontally, like the Valentine ONE, I used very, very thin copper wire to attache it to the visor clip, using a tiny picture hanging hook. I used super glue for holding the clip to the unit (I tried Gorilla Glue, the original glue and that failed. With the super glue, it bonded instantly.) Another feature that I like is the beep & voice at start-up that labels K, Ka, Laser modes. Perfect. It IS a really sophisticated detector, to say the least. When I have to rotate the visor downward I know that it blocks the detector's rearward warning antenna, so I keep it up in its normal position 99% of the time. No worries. I highly recommend this unit and feel that I made a great purchase here on Amazon.

Very Very Few False Alerts
This has been an amazing radar detector so far. Very easy to install and lots of different menu options to adjust the radar to your liking. It has been very quite around town very very few false alerts I got my first real alert leaving school today and it did great as it went off immediately and saved me from a ticket in a school zone. This radar detector is well worth the investment and I couldnโt be happier. The only downside I found was the big suction cup mount did break as I was trying to install it, so I just used the small 2 cup which works just fine. Couldnโt be happier with this radar

Worth the cost for a solid radar detector
It was such an great detector. I decided to give it to my baby brother for his birthday cross country trip to keep him safe (even though he drives like a grandma). Worked amazing hits even red light cameras and speed cameras. The range was impressive too. Loud enough to pull your attention but not excessive. While I burned the screen due to leaving it up 24/7. The colors can be set to match with most dash colors. The window mount held up to multiple Carolina summers.

Solid Upgrade for Daily Driving!!
This is my second time buying this product (first one was stolen out of my car). This thing works. The range is impressive, youโre getting alerts well ahead of time, not last second. Only thing I donโt like is that it doesnโt track all police vehicles. You can be in front of a cop car and it will not go off as an alert. GPS features and voice alerts make it feel smart, not noisy, and the mute memory keeps it from repeating the same alerts over and over. The display is clear, easy to read, and setup was straightforward. I personally like the different color displays depending on what. Feels like a reliable upgrade for everyday driving without being distracting. Definitely worth it for a basic, first time long ranger laser.

Excellent! Better than Passport 9800ix (the previous King)
(Update to review) June 2023, 3 & a half years of use. Still going strong. The best single antenna radar detector I've used. Especially for Ka band. I've disabled X band and reduced K sensitivity. Remember to buy a heavy duty windshield mount for it as the suction cups that come with it are not of great quality. They are hard and often fail to stay put. I have seen people complain about it detecting other cars and sounding false alarms, like the reviewer "Zero" mentioned. But, I have kept that issue at bay with updating the device with newest firmware every 6 months, and updating database ensuring all the newest speed camera locations are saved on the device. If your firmware is old, then it obviously will not have information about newest car models with their new radar frequencies, specifically newer Honda and Acura models. The latest firmaware update that I've done was from Oct 2022, and has two K blocks to keep the R3 quiet near vehicles with parking radar systems. With those two K blocks enabled, you can keep your quiet mode as low as 25mph and your detector will not give you any false alarms. If someone complains that their 2019 bought radar detector is not detecting 2022 Honda parking radar, they need to listen to themselves and think about what they are saying. Update the firmware regularly, and you should be just fine. --------------------- (Original review) Let me get one thing out of the way first. Those small suction cups to hold the detector on windshield, suck! But that's where all the bad ends. I've replaced an Escort Passport 9500ix with Uniden R3. Initially, I wasn't sure if it was the right thing to do. But, now I'm certain it was. I did have some trouble with false alarms every time I passed one of the newer Hondas and Acuras. But after updating the firmware, the issue is gone. Updating required downloading USB interface software (to have the computer detect the device), installer software and the latest upgrade file. All were found on one page of Uniden website with step by step instructions. One important thing. I'm using a generic smart cable that I bought for my Passport device on Amazon. I got it because the cable was long and I ran it hidden inside the dash. I'm using the same cable for the R3 and it works fine. Except the mute button on the plug wouldn't mute the R3. All lights work though. I use the mute on the device itself. The device has excellent range, minimum false alarms, and a great Quiet Ride feature. I miss auto mute on 9800ix, but Mute Memory on R3 is just fine. One small price to pay for an otherwise better detector.

AWESOME Detector, I just use KA and laser now, almost no false alerts.
I have been using this in my 2005 Pontiac Montana for over 3 months now. I live In Las Vegas NV, and I primarily drive in the metro area here. But I do take road trips up to St George, Out to LA, and last week I even went to Reno. Because I came from a different detector, that had a ton of X band false alerts, and because I did my research and knew that NO ONE in CA, NV, or UT used X band any longer, I immediately turned that band off. Thusly I got zero X band false alerts :-) I have been watching my K, Ka, and Laser bands, and writing notes on what I see and when I see it. I have gotten a ton of false alerts on the K band, and the ONLY cop I ever saw on K band was a podunk sheriff's car in a podunk town on the way to Reno, one of those towns where the highway runs right through the middle of the town and they decrease you to 25 just for the purpose of giving you a traffic ticket. I don't even remember the name of the town, might have been Goldfield. Anyway, Other that that one time last week, I have found that EVERY laser was a cop I could put eye balls on. I found that almost every Ka notification was a cop I could put eyes on, so I have now turned off my K band because I get almost no false alerts on the Ka band. And the Ka warnings I got were almost 100% at a distance of at LEAST a block in the city and at LEAST a 1/4 mile on the highway. This detector has gotten me out of at lest 5 speeding tickets in the last 3 months, that is how good it is! We don't have red light cameras in Vegas, and I have only heard the red light camera go off once while I was in another state, so I have no practical experience with the red light feature. I have three complaints about the detector, none of which caused it to loose any stars for me. #1 No volume dial. I would like to be able to set the volume on the fly just by rotating a dial. #2 When I mark a spot as mute, it continues to announce my distance to that spot multiple times as I approach it on future visits. I HATE that, if I muted it, it is because I don't want to know about it. I should have the option to leave announcements on, or turn them off. I have a K band motion sensor at the door of a Walgreens right by my house that I pass by sometimes 3 or 4 times in a day, and the announcements were worse that the actual beeps when the detector saw the motion sensor. I just don't want the K band to announce at that location at all, ever. #3 The laser is not enough notification. I have heard my laser go off 5 to 8 times in 3 months. Twice on my trip to Reno and back where I was in the middle of nowhere and I could not identify a cop anywhere. Lets call those anomalies, which leave 3 to 5 in the city. Of those I recall 3 where I could put eyes on the cop, and the warnings I got where too late for me to do anything about it. I was not speeding enough to get pulled over at those times, but If I was I would not have been able to slow down quick enough to get out of the ticket. I think this is because cops with Ka band, just leave their detectors on while driving, even if they are not looking for speeders, and the same goes when they are looking for speeders. Cops here do not seem to POP with their Ka band guns at all. But cops using laser seem to be turning them on and off quickly as they target specific vehicles, which makes it much harder to catch them before they target me, or someone right around me.

Once you set it up correctly for your area the R3 kills Redline and false alerts will decrease
I have been running the Escort Redline since 2013, on my recent trip to Oregon from California I was tagged by CHP right at the border of Cali and Oregon. I was wondering why my Escort didn't warn me. The officer asked me if my radar detector went off and I said no. I asked if he used Ka and he said that's all they use in Northern Cali. Luckily, the officer was kind enough and let me off with a warning (going 51 mph in a 45 zone). A day later my Redline "Service Required" showed up. I sent in my Redline to Escort and got the 139.99 service but in the mean time I needed a reliable detector so I purchased the R3. I heard good reviews about it and a lot of YouTube videos from Vortex Radar showed me how to set it up properly for my area. I used it going to Vegas from LA a week later for a boys weekend. It saved me twice going up a hill on the 15 Hwy. I was also very impressed with the distance the R3 picked up Ka signals. It warned me 2 miles before I made visual of the CHP officer in Baker. A week and a half later I received my Redline and decided to test out the performance with the R3. Don't get me wrong, I love my Redline. It has saved my bacon more times than I can remember but while I was driving East on the 60 Hwy near Rowland Heights, the R3 went off and about 3-4 seconds later the newly flashed and serviced Redline (new dual antenna/software) went off indicating Ka band. It did this twice on the way home. I was upset my Redline got out performed but glad the R3 did it's job. I tested it a few more days and similar results. However, the Redline picked up K bands about 1-3 seconds before the R3 but in Cali the Ka band is the one I'm worried about. Now my Redline is on Ebay and getting sold. I love the setting adjustment of the R3. Q-ride, display adjustments, low battery indicator, auto shut off with low battery, ease of updating software, GPS, auto mute memory, etc. Too much to list. The R3 does get extremely hot after running it but it doesn't seem to affect performance. Though, I dislike the two suction mounting as the smaller one is not very stable and the larger one is too big for my liking but ended up using the smaller mount as it less noticeable behind the rear view mirror. Power cord is nice that it as an extra USB in so you can still charge other devices. I mounted the unit just under the rear view mirror on the windshield and I am able to access the unit without reaching for the power cord to mute the unit. I ended up making an mirror cord using and old RJ11 telephone cord, a couple of spade connectors, heat shrink, and some solder (not paying $19 for the mirror power cord hard wire). If you decide to make one remember the Red wire is power and the Green is ground in the RJ11 connection. So far excellent performance and the unit has paid for itself. $399.99 is a great price. As of today 8/15/18 I did notice on Uniden's website that they are all sold out but they do have the refurbished units of the R3 and R1 for 329.99 and 239.99 respectively which IMHO is a great price.

Do not buy for UK. Does not work without reprogramming.
I bought this knowing full well it wouldn't work in the UK, which it doesn't.. Well it does, it picks up X, K & KA bands very well but we're talking traffic lights, automatic doors etc.. And the GPS database for speed cameras and red light cameras obviously doesn't work because it's loaded with the USA database. You can, however, visit and register to join RDforum and receive the correct update files and UK gps database from there for a small fee. All very easy to do. Its now perfect!

Picks up gatso camera from quite a distance.
Seems to work on gatso cameras. That's the fixed camera at side of the road. And does not go off if there's no camera in the gatso. Not had chance to test on a mobile speed camera van. I'd say watch videos on you tube.

Useless in Uk
Picks up everything except speed cameras. Fixed, or in vans, neither result in a response from the device. Yet to be tested on hand held guns but I am not expecting much. In addition to its uselessness, the mute button on the cigarette plug (which is used a lot) has a habit of sticking which upsets the unit and indicates to me it is not great quality. I expected more from this product given its price. And would advise not to buy.

Waste of money
