Not what I was expecting, but still good
I was expecting a literal journal replica that Rapunzel has in the series, the one she writes and paints in, but this is nothing like that. It's more of a commentary by Rapunzel, Cass and Eugene on past events/episodes. There are neat little things that you can unfold and look at, new artwork and pictures (as far as I know), and the back and forth between the characters can be funny. There are a lot of screenshots from actual episodes used as pictures, which doesn't really make sense given the time period, and there are these awkward small circles next to their handwriting that feels kind of condescending. They have different handwriting that's in different colors and they call each other by name in several instances. The use of their shrunken faces on pictures next to the text was just unnecessary and awkward looking, it really holds back the quality of it. Other than that, pretty good read, and it was interesting to hear about the characters' individual opinions and feelings about events that take place in episodes and other characters.

Glad I borrowed it from the library first
I give this book 2 stars because I love this show and especially the characters, and the artwork was fun, but unfortunately this book was overall a disappointing and slightly tacky representation of season 1. It didn't bring up Lance Strongbow at all and left out some episodes like "Big Brothers of Corona," one of my favorites, so Red and Angry weren't mentioned either. :( They also explained some of the episodes out of chronological order and left out some really important details in a way that was confusing and upsetting. It is not a replica the way Gravity Falls: Journal 3 and SvtFoE: The Magic Book of Spells is. I would much sooner recommend The Lost Lagoon and The Vanishing Village as books that accompany the series.
