48-inch reach is very handy
I almost purchased a smaller, less expensive version but there were 3 things which convinced me to buy this particular Key-Bak: > 48-inch cable At work, they issue a very cheap, retractable-key version. (Not even the "Key-Bak" brand.) The cable is short, probably 24-inches and whatever it's made out of, breaks more often than we should be dealing with. I've been finding that the 48-inch cable length of this Key-Bak has been very handy, more than I initially realized. I'm glad I didn't buy the shorter one. > Durability I was going to buy a shorter-cable Key-Bak but when I saw that it had a "steel" cable, it convinced me to buy this one. The plastic housing also seems to be very well made. > Reviews I read several other Reviews here but the ones which convinced me to buy this particular Key-Bak are the ones where those Owners had left their key in the Ignition when they got out of their vehicle. Naturally, the Key-Bak Product would break but what sold me was when they said they would buy another one. My experience with this Key-Bak has been very positive. I work 5-days a week and right around 8-hours a day. I'm a Janitor at work. My Key-Bak only contains 4 smaller Dispenser keys and a Key Fob for the many doors I have to open throughout the day. Although I open a few different "types" doors, I probably use that Key Fob 80 times during each Shift. So about 400 times each week and I've had this Key-Bak for almost 2-months now. As I examine it closely, the only sign of "use" is a very minor scuff (not even a "scratch") mark on the flat part where the name is. Yes, I lock and unlock the ball-joint many times throughout the day. When I first saw the photos of this Product, I thought the slot up its side was unnecessary but once I started using it, I quickly realized that this is the track for the cable. Without that slot, the Key-Bak would twist and put pressure on your belt. This is a well thought out Product. Before deciding on this particular Key-Bak, I did hesitate because of it's size. Yes, it is 2.25-inches wide but it's also 2.75-inches tall (not counting the Ring or the Ring's holder). The Ring itself is 1.5-inches in diameter. So, with the Ring locked in place, the entire unit measures 4.5-inches (from the top of the holder to the bottom of the Ring). I'm an average size guy but with this Product on my belt, I don't feel like it's out of place on me. The only "negative" I can find for this Product is that it takes me several seconds to remove it from my belt. Of course, this could be a "positive" for some of you. In other words, it's not going to come off of your belt unless YOU purposely remove it. ------- Update ------- This Product lasted almost a year. I didn't realize that "I" had been abusing it by always releasing my keys when the cable was fully extended to its 48-inch length... but even with that it did last quite a while. When it broke, I did some research and bought a different Brand. This one had a 31-inch reach, a metal shell and was "supposedly" Rate at 100,000 Pulls. It last ALMOST 1-month. (The entire Product just came apart.) Two of the same Products came in the same Order. Just a week before it broke, I had given the 2nd one to a co-worker. The day it broke, I decided to go back to a "Key-Bak". It should be here in a few days. When the Key-Bak broke, its cable had pulled-away from its connection inside the plastic housing. With the new Key-Bak, I think I'm going to place a rubber washer on the cable, between that metal ball and the plastic housing. This should help absorb a bit of the shock each time I release my keys.

Keeps Your Keys From Falling Out of Your Pocket While You're Popping Squats at Work
Not to brag, but I've lost a lot of stuff. Thank you ADHD. Truly my most unreliable and loudest friend. Security badges, keys, knives, my wife, walkie talkies, my “Jamaican Me Crazy" keychain, etc. ALL GONE…until I got this KEY-BAK Keychain that is. If you know me you know two things, I like a good vegan pancake, and I look good in a long sleeve shirt, (which is also primarily all I wear, and some people might say that means I always look good, but we aren’t here to talk about those heroes) but if you really really know me, you know your boy is going to lose a few things. Now don’t get me wrong, I believe everything has it’s place and every place has it’s thing…or else. However, even someone as sane as myself is going to eventually lose something. You can’t bend, lift, high-kick, and squat as much as I do, and then not expect to have something fall out of your pocket (and if you really really really know me, you know I pop A LOT of squats). I work hard for what I got, so you better believe I’m showing off the goods. That’s neither here nor there, all I’m saying is my penchant for the dramatic and my “grotesque” need for never-ending compliments has betrayed me a time or two. If you’ve ever worked in an office, you know the deal. You go in dreading your day, you swipe your badge to enter the building, pop your squat, and then your horribly janky badge reel breaks. Now you’re left carrying your badge and or keys around like a chump holding his best friend’s purse while she takes her 97th selfie, hoping one day she’ll look at you the same way she looks at that phone. That’s no way to live, (unless you’re any type of politician, then it's deserved), and that was almost me until I got this key reel. I’ve used this KEY-BAK Keychain NONSTOP during my 10+ hour shifts, and it still works flawlessly. The cord still feels good and the base is solid. I'm not a big fan of the Happy Meal plastic toy feel, but if I focus on the positives (an attitude of gratitude, thank you very much) and have a drink or three, I'm good. When I see other people with their regular run of the mill badge/key reels, I feel a little sad for them. For any squat they pop could be the last.

Incredible product, no frills
For this product only being $10, I would have happily paid double, triple, even quadruple. Most of the retractable keychains listed on Amazon look like and are (according to reviews) the typical private labelled, Chinese-made junk. This one is made in the USA, feels insanely solid (now I see why the product pictures show some guy with an angle grinder showcasing the product). I'm very critical about any product I purchase and everything about it just makes sense. CASE: The case itself is a solid build - made of steel coated with a resilient polymer. The metal belt clip that is assembled onto the casing has no play whatsoever - perfectly tight tolerances. The belt clip itself is pretty strong so be careful with potential wear on soft leather - a tightly-woven nylon gun belt should hold up just fine. OPENING: Where other products would have a tiny opening at the bottom and cause friction when pulling the keyring, this product has a slit that runs along the side down to the bottom that allows you to pull away the keyring effortlessly without it causing the case to rotate. CABLE: In comparison, almost all the other similar products listed are using nylon strings which is bound to break as you wear it. This one uses a steel cable that is sleeved - so basically a lifetime. LOCKING FEATURE: I didn't even know this was a feature until I used it and it actually makes so much sense. If you have a ton of keys that would apply force to the spring inside, it probably would not stay retracted. This has a locking mechanism at the bottom end of the side opening that I mentioned earlier. This not only allows you to have a bunch of keys that could weigh a bunch and keep the keyring retracted, but it prevents it from getting pulled if something gets caught on it. Getting it in and out of that locking portion at the bottom of the slit is very easy. PACKAGING: No frills, minimal packaging. It's a simple plastic bag, almost like a packet of fasteners you'd buy at Home Depot. Clearly they invested in the R&D of the product and didn't spend money on fancy packaging that the consumer is just going to toss in the trash.

It's junk but you need it.
The metal belt clip on this thing is absolutely dog piss. I've broken it on both ones I've purchased. The plastic housing is kinda shotty as well, but sturdy for plastic. Now moving on, I'm a custodian so I am entering sometimes over 100 rooms in a shift. Normally I had your typically clip on chain ring for all my miscellanious keys I needed. It was such a chore hooking it and unhooking it, or leaving it somewhere and losing it. Not with the keybak buddy! Thing is an absolute life saver. Saves me incredible amounts of time, and I get asked "Where'd you get that from?" regularly on the job. It's a marvellous product. Going back to the build quality, the key holder itself, and the plastic I must admit is quite thick. It feels good to use, until the belt clip breaks. I am a pretty tall guy so if the cord were a little longer I'd be definitely thankful. But just in one night I think this thing saves me 30 minutes at least that would otherwise be spent fumbling with my keys. The belt clip is CRAP though! It's like they knew their product was too good, and went back in to poorly engineer it so people would buy more over time! Breaks everytime, and if it's not breaking when I pull the cord to grab my key it comes off, or goes all sideways, breaks, etc. Very annoying!

Still a great key/id holder
I owned one of these from the company previously. It was a different shape. Still a great key/id holder.

I really recommend the Key-Bak Locking Retractable Reel
I really recommend the Key-Bak Locking Retractable Reel. I normally don't write reviews, but this really is the best one I have owned. I have had two other key reels in the past and they are not the same. Both of the reels I owned were the metal type you can buy at any hardware store. The first one lost tension in the reel after two months of extended use (I noticed the pull on the keys lessened after the first month, but month two was when it got so bad my keys would hang about an inch lower). The second reel one day popped off my belt, hit the ground, and promptly broke. I was pretty sick of the reels after that. My boss had recommended the Key-Bak (or at least a similar product) when I was first a key holder. I decided as a store manager that I needed something a little more sturdy than those cheap metal reels that don't last long. (I use my keys at least 20+ times a day, so something that craps out with use is not going to work.) He really sold me on the locking feature and the Kevlar cord, which doesn't break like the metal chains do. He's been with our company for a while and said he went through 5 of the metal one's before switching. He praises the Key-Bak and I now see why. (I am the third manager to make the switch.) The polycarbonate shell is very sturdy. I don't worry at all about it cracking, even while I move furniture throughout my store (a thrift store). It doesn't really feel like I expected it to. I had imagined something more akin to plastic, but it feels a bit more solid if that makes any sense. The overall build quality is well worth the price in my opinion, and I went for the more expensive of the two options. (I don't NEED the 13 ounce retraction, but it feels great!) The locking feature is a nice plus as it is smooth and snaps in place with a satisfying "click" that lets you know it is in place. I tend to play with my keys when I am thinking and the lock has stayed very strong despite me over using it. The click has not dulled (which can happen as groves wear and thus softening the sound of the click). It makes my keys seem in place and makes it hard for them to hook on something without me knowing. I also love how the click works both if you are locking or unlocking your keys. The Kevlar cord is also very nice. It doesn't feel like it could break easy, and I think if they use the stuff to stop bullets, not much will break the cord. In addition, the reel and retraction are solid. The metal reels I used in the past had a clunky pull and retraction that I just never really liked. The Key-Bak is smooth both directions and just retracts faster. After a few hundred pulls, it's still just as solid as the first use. The belt clip is also great. I am not worried about my keys popping off my belt again, as it takes some work to unclip the reel. Normally I remove belt and slide my Key-Bak off. This is not a downside to me as I would rather slide my keys off my belt than have a reel that jumps ship one day and commits suicide like unfortunate metal reel 2 (if only he had talked with me, I could have gotten him the help he needed, it just wasn't the way to go). If you are on the fence about getting this reel for your keys, get off the fence (as I find most fence sitting is painful on the rear) and make the right choice. I feel you can't go wrong with a Key-Bak.
