If it is mounted with the threads up (as shown in the picture) with an empty tank, will the switch be open or closed?

If my memory serves me right it is closed when tank would be empty so in the down position with threads up like you said. and switch open when tank is full or float in the up position. I use it to keep a water holding tank full

Can this switch be used with gasoline?

Matches are best used with gasoline. Seriously, the switch yes, I'm pretty sure if needed in a pinch, but the floater would disintegrate. Pay up and get something properly rated for that.

What is the approximate diameter of the cylinder?

Don't get it. It's is junk!! I threw it away! But the size is is right about 1-1/2"
