Well worth the price for engineers

This is a very handy little guide to have around when you want to typeset some math into a report or paper or whatever and want to double-check that you're adhering to recommended practice. It is surprisingly comprehensive for its slim 84 pages. It has three concise indexes, for Latin variables, Greek variables, and a Topic index, which makes looking up the correct entries for a particular usage quick and easy. It doesn't try to teach you the math behind the symbols, but even the summary descriptions are enough to jog one's memory sufficiently provided you already have the appropriate math background. The LaTeX table is a very useful quick-reference, although a few entries are missing (eg the 'fancy' R for real numbers which can be generated with the '\mathbb{R}' command). Like another reviewer, I also wish the publisher had put the title on the (admittedly slim) spine of the book, making it easier to find on the bookshelf. These are minor quibbles though, and overall I consider it an excellent value for its intended audience of engineers and scientists.

Good resource.

Good book to fill in the gaps of your math notation, if you have some. Not a great read, but very useful as a reference.

Nice little reference and beyond

First, this book is not an endless guide to all things math symbols and there are some limitations. Though it does provide a useful guide for students. One of the major limits of this book is that it is limited to math. So if you are reading an equation in your Calculus book and want to look up a symbol in this book you may not find it. Because it is a physics symbol. Like angular veloctiy ( lower case omega ) won't be found here, but it is covered in the book from a pure mathematical standpoint. Also this book does not cover every usage since math books were written.one minor thing I notice missing was epsilon defined for Calculus limits in this book.He does a great job with the standard greek usage for functions, like Euler totient and such. And he provides the same for constants that everyone should probably know. Also he does a great job of clarifying when multiple symbols are used for the same notation, and how to use them without mixing and matching. So there is some elements of style in this book. The index by Greek letter is not totally complete, since it does not include the numerical constants. ( kind of odd ). But it is very helpful that the book has and index by symbols, both greek and otherwise, and an topical index. The latex chart is a nice bonus.Overall for the novice student this is better than trying to search a website, and it is informational. For the advanced student, it might not be the book for you.All in all it is still worth the price.

Very helpful

It’s full of interesting facts about math.

Genuinely upset I did not have this on me when I was an undergraduate engineering student

Recently purchased this as I was taking graduate-level coursework in probability, random variables, and stochastic processes. Juggling between textbooks used in the class featuring different notation, tutorials online featuring different notation, and already having a shaky familiarity with set theory and logic, this book helped cut down a lot of mental energy spent trying to decipher the different authors' notation regarding already difficult concepts. Perhaps if this guide was around when I was an undergraduate, I may have paid more attention to the core content that matters in mathematics rather than feeling frustrated whenever different teachers, authors, etc. decide to switch up notation between learning resources. It is also nice to have around as a quick resource when I forget LaTeX notation for the hard-to-google symbols I desire.

Must have for people who need to do math. A comprehensive lookup table for nearly all of mathematics.

A comprehensive lookup table for nearly all of mathematics. Must have for people who need to do math.I'm preparing myself for higher-level mathematics courses in university study and for future study of mathematics. In many math texts, it is assumed that the reader knows the notation, however I've never figured out where people learn all of this notation. This book includes a few tables by which the reader can look up the desired symbol and be directed toward a page in the book where the symbol is explained. Many thanks for purchasing this book. I may purchase multiple copies after I get a salary just to further show my appreciation.

Fantastic reference material

This is a fantastic desktop reference for mathematical notation. You will find common, and uncommon forms of expression. The notation is clearly explained and shown in various forms. If you need a reference for different types of notation this is well worth the money. I found it better and clearer than most internet resources.

Concise, to the point.

Before this book I would see Math problems with lower case Mu, Xi, Psi and I did not understand the context behind the symbols. This book is smaller in height x width, and gives the scoop on the mathematical symbols one may come across.Five stars !!
